We did not need Disneyland when I was a kid - we had Myrtle.
"In the day" it was not a crime riddled location like now, but pure magic.
My family went there for a week every year, often with relatives.
I can still remember the adult men at the kitchen table the night before going over the map as to what route to take.
Excitement was in the air, and we could feel it.
Most years the caravan would leave early hoping to make McBee by Sun Rise. There we would gather for coffee and doughnuts.
Us kids would sleep in the back seat knowing we would be awakened so as not to miss going over the long bridges. That was a real treat! After that it was lots of amazing black water on both sides of the road.
The Pavilion, the Boardwalk, and the carnival there was as good as any Disney.
For a week would play in the sand, hunt whatever along the shore, and tackle the waves.
It was magic!

I take my family every year. It's still a wonderful place. You just have to know where to go and when. Takes a bit more effort but it's still making awesome family memories for me and my young kids. The arcades at the old pavilion boardwalk are still one of my favorites. Of course a round of putt putt at spyglass or jurassic. And then just plain good old beach time.

In my teens went to OD as the action was there.
The last times stay at Litchfield or camp in Huntington Park.
I remain a fan of the Myrtle area.

Love the Cherry Grove beach area. Close to calabash and Bearfoot Landing. More family oriented and not the terrible problem around Myrtle. Also, much safer.

I live in the Myrtle Beach area and have, on and off, for decades. There is no doubt that a lot of change has come to the area and several of the more nostalgic spots have succumbed to crime and cultural shifts. There are still fantastic places to take a family for a week, but the downtown area is a place that you visit now and don't stay. Sun Fun and Can Am were awesome times to be in town before they got canceled.
For those miniature golf people, there are some really good new ones on the south avenues. Most recently I have been impressed by Red Dragon Cove.

Our one vacation a year was a week in Myrtle. The night before we left was Christmas Eve in summer. Getting through Conway and the back up in traffic for the draw bridge over the inter coastal waterway was excruciating. Dad turning off the a/c in stand still traffic for fear the car would overheat. The depression that set in when the week was done…

It was city code that you have a rope on your float so it had to be made well, and yes we all rode the surf with red sore ####### but it was all in the fun of it.
Those floats saved many lives.

Those were good times. My grandpa had a Winnebago and we would spend at least a week every summer at ocean lakes. Sometimes we would take off for a long weekend and go down there. Nowadays if I made a list of the top 50 places to vacation within 6 hrs from the house the dirty Myrtle wouldn’t be on that list. I miss those times though.

We called it mother effers. We got our free t-shirts there every year. I think they had one night a week when they were free if you got there before a certain time. I loved my Panama jack’s t-shirts too. They were popular in the early 80’s

Yes
Dirty Myrtle used to be a place for families to go and have a great vacation and didn’t have to worry about anything. Now the strip isn’t a safe place for families. It’s a shame. Does anyone remember the Chesterfield Inn?

Walking the beaches with no curfew. For whatever reason, Mama took those weeks off too, except one. That was a rough Sunday. She made me and my buddy go to to Sun Church on Sunday outdoors at Barefoot (no longer exist).... What a time to be a teenager. I still wonder about some of that stuff. I had a really good time down/over there. I hate my kids didn't get to experience that. Thanks for waking up that again

My parents used to drop us off at the Pavilion in the 70's and they would go eat or go to the movies while and we would ride and eat at the McDonald's across the street and walk to attractions like the Guiness World record museum, Dracula's Castle (my fave), Magic Attic, Arcades and the Gay Dolphin gift coves to shop for cheap souveniers. Good times indeed.
No way in H E double hockey sticks I would drop my kids or grandkids on that strip today by themselves.

So true. I went in the 70's & early 80"s. Everything about it was like going to a different world compared to Rock Hill, SC.... The Magic Attic was something like I had never imagined. It was a safe vacation spot then too.

I LOVED Myrtle when I was a kid and teenager. Lots of good times. We went every year the 1st week in August. We always went to play putt-putt, the gay dolphin, pavillion, grand strand amusement park and calabash for seafood. I don’t care much about going there anymore but I’ll always remember the wonderful times!

MB was extremely enjoyable for me in the late 50s and 60s. Last time I went there for beach lounging was 1977. Only go near the area for annual golf events with some HS grads and friends staying at places like Litchfield, Legends or Barefoot Landing. Stayed at Ocean Isle when the kids were young.

At the corner of 17 and ocean boulevard across from the Air Force base. She told me it was the first waterslide in South Carolina. Box or band-aides is right.
There was also one of those concrete waterslides in Anderson, South Carolina on the hill on the right before you cross over 85 on 76 headed to Clemson.

out of North Murtle. He was flown into Vanderbilt when needed. He was also a Blue Angel after a stint in the US Air Force; his father flew troops around Korea. It's not surprising that his dexterity was superior. He also drove the pace car at Darlington for a bit.
We visited him a couple of times when I was younger. I remember him taking me for a ride in his 935 when I was about 12, I was pinned against my seat while he was able to work the transmission.
Anyway, and this was a while ago, Murtle was slightly less trashy than Panama City, the latter felt like a 3rd world country.
Good times.

Really sad at the differences in MB compared to my childhood. If and when I go I stay North or South of Myrtle. Still some great areas in those parts. If it wasn’t for the golf I would probably for-go it all together. Became a mountain lover in the last 15-20 years.

That place did seem like a wonderland as a kid in the 1980's and early 90's. The mini golf, batting cages, pavilion, shops, and the seafood were all something you looked forward to the entire year.

My mother's first cousin owned a motel, right on main drag not too many blocks form the pavilion ...... The Colonial Inn. However, she never encouraged (allowed) me to stay there during our visits there when I was in high school for first week festivities. I suspect that a few on here may have spent a night or two there.
I never go to that part of Myrtle anymore. I have had several projects there in recent years but always in the North Myrtle Beach area,

I live in Myrtle Beach and absolutely love it here! By the looks of the traffic, restaurants, grocery stores, and beach, many people still love coming here to vacation. I must admit though, I rarely go to the boardwalk area especially at night because that seems to be the area where trouble may arise.
Tiger fans are always welcome in Myrtle Beach!

Haven't been to MB in forever... family used to have a house there, so we always went.
Even though I was little, I still remember the blizzard at Christmas of 89.
My favorite ornate decorated sugar cookies from Latif's, I can still taste them, yet can't find a place that comes close to replicating.
Brings back so many memories!!

Was an annual tradition with my parents and another family in the 60s and early 70s. We’d stay in Surfside or Garden City but venture to Myrtle for an afternoon at the pavilion and seafood somewhere, normally Murrells Inlet. They would rent on second row as it was much cheaper but always had a house with a clear view of the beach. Houses we rented didn’t have AC so we left front and back doors open( no need to lock up) to catch the ocean breeze! As we got older, I was a faithful attendee of “1st Week” but always took time to go spend a day or two with my parents whenever they would go. As adults, we’d take our parents to Cherry Grove but in the latter years, we vacationed back in GardenCity. Myrtle was a great place. It’s sad that certain cultures choose to bring trouble to what was a great family vacation place.

Lots of memories for me as a kid also! My family and family friends also went for a week to Pirateland every summer. Then, they had a theme park beside it, long since torn down. Magic Harbor I think was its name. Also, I remember those tubing adventures and dropping over those concrete rides. Come home bruised up, but had fun.

I have a split decision on Myrtle Beach. North Myrtle is fantastic. A great place for a vacation with just adults or with kids. Every trip I’ve taken to the grand Strand has been an absolute debacle. Redneck everywhere, loud motorcycles everywhere, fights, drunks, you name it…

Every year we stayed at Litchfield but took our kids to ride the rides at the Pavilion. Our friends said we were nuts but our kids loved it. We took their friends too. Now they are grown and neither they nor we would take our grandchildren back. Great tunes for our kids though.
