I don't think this is fair, and I'm someone a lot of people consider a massive hater.
Recruits do still care about a coach's personality and a nice football facility. Those are still pitches we can use in recruiting, and should. I like Dabo and I think his personality can have a big impact on parents who are influential in their kid's decision-making. So I don't agree with this assessment.
The issue is that those have never been the biggest priority of kids. The biggest priorities have always been: (1) The best chance to make the NFL; (2) The best chance to win championships; (3) Playing for a big program with name-recognition they can brag about; and (4) Playing time, in that order. Everything else has always been gravy. NIL money is now a new factor, up there with (1) and (2). So there haven't been that many changes in priorities.
But unfortunately, we (1) no longer do well on draft night compared to our peers, and few of our stars have panned out in the NFL; (2) we offer basically no NIL money; (3) we haven't been nationally relevant is a while. For a junior in high school, our last title was when they were in elementary school; and (4) People's memories are short, and we don't have that prestigious name recognition compared with programs that were once our peers or below us.
So our issue isn't Dabo's "aw shucks" shtick. That's still a positive. The issue is that we no longer are elite in the things recruits do care about, and we refuse to even try in NIL, meaning we lose recruits that otherwise would choose us.

Otherwise our 2025 recruiting class wouldn't be hemorrhaging most of its highest ranked players. The "Happy Go Lucky" personality with a southern twang and football facilty with a nap room didn't keep them committed.
