A stalwart New Ellenton business will close after getting the community moving for 37-years.
Goodman Chevrolet-Coachman on Main Street, which has sold cars to the community for four decades, is set to close with the family owners citing the flagging economy as the reason for closing.
"Yep, we will be closing," said Charles Goodman, co-owner and operator. "Probably in the middle of November, probably about the 10th to be exact. We will still be around moving what is left."
With financing of cars difficult to get and people simply not buying new cars, brothers Charles and James Goodman decided to close and move on.
"GMAC are toughening up on dealers," Charles said. "It's coming from the top."
Charles added that individuals looking for car loans are more regularly refused.
"People just aren't buying cars. I can't believe there is a dealer in the area making a profit."
Along with the economy, Charles said his age also played a part in the decision.
"We are getting to the age where we need to be retiring," he said. "We expected to be two more lean years."
The company believes it will have to let its nine employees go, however, the entire business will not close.
"Our service manager is going to run the garage as an independent operation," Charles said.
The new/old business will be run by Anthony Shaw, who has been with Goodman Chevrolet for 22 years. Shaw will employ several former Goodman employees.
