can someone explain the 11 and 12 seed play-in games in the

NCAA tourney.

Obviously, we are in the thick of football season but, regarding the ncaaa basketball tourney, how does a team who is an 11 or 12 seed get stuck in a play in game while the other 11 and 12, along with the 13, 14, and 15 seeds get safely in the tourney. I can certainly understand the 16 or even 15 seeds having a play-in game but the 11 and 12 seeds just dont make sense to me.

anyone have any insight?

The play in games I think of more like “at-large” play in games. It’s basically a way to get a few extra at large teams a chance to get in. This is due to the fact that every conference champion in the NCAA gets an automatic spot into the tournament, and these teams are usually seeded 13-16 since the NCAA knows they are still likely to be worse overall teams than the 11-12 seed at larges bids. They will also pick the teams they feel are the worst overall and make them do a play in for two of the 16 seeds, effectively increasing more room for at-large teams to have a chance.

I think of it like a wildcard play in game like in baseball. It benefits teams who are on the fringe, for example Clemson in 2010 when we had a play in game against UAB. Both teams were right on the fringe of being left out, but we both got a chance thanks to the play in game.

That being said, I don’t care for it because 64 teams is enough, but it’s also a way to make more money.

simple: the 'last 4 in' at-large teams are better than some

conference champions

and it's always going to be at-large selections playing in the play-in games, not conference champs who get an automatic slot

They didn't want to totally shaft the small conferences as those conf champs would all get relegated to play in games if it was purely based on seeding.

The compromise was to have the 4 weakest conference champs in play in games and the last 4 at large teams in playoff games, that's why it's not all the 16 seeds that are in play in games.

Well that and the fact that

Nobody would tune it to watch 4 games between 16 seeds, so this give you one actual interesting game each night for TV purposes.
