At the college level or the pro. Anybody really CAN beat anyone or lose to anyone on any given day. We can win 50 games and still not make it to Omaha. Unfortunately in today's world of sports consistency takes a back seat to (the moment) when we have way too many teams in the playoffs and you are more likely to have an inferior team win the whole thing. It was better when you had to ACTUALLY WIN your CONFERENCE in college or HS or DIVISION in MLB to make the playoffs. Then there was a better chance to reward a champion for consistency. Baseball truly should be a marathon not a sprint. But of course that is no longer true in the " lets give everyone a trophy " world we live in.

probably more about the $$ grab with extra teams rather than 'everyone' gets a trophy. YMMV.

And in the ACC, you could go undefeated the entire season, lose one game to an inferior team in the tournament, and be done for the year under your scenario.
