Anyone with some advice on Eczema?

So after all these many years I managed to develop eczema over this winter. At first I thought it was just dry itchy skin due to low humidity levels here in Michigan over the winter months, but it just kept getting worse. Dermatologist wants to get me hooked into UVB light therapy. My daughter is an MA at dermatologist office in Anderson. She says they don’t recommend light therapy because of increased risk of skin cancer. The preference seems to be biologic injections (eg Dupixent). That drug seems to have some interesting side effects I’d rather avoid (vision and joint pain).
Here’s what I have been doing to try to quelch the flare up. Bath bar and lotion with Colloidal oatmeal. A friend recommended adding a probiotic as apparently there are good gut bacteria that can help with the dermal inflammation. I also added Tumeric supplement as that has anti inflammatory benefits. I read beef tallow based ointment is something folks have used.

My daughter has it really bad as well. Oatmeal baths and aveeno lotion have made a huge difference. We did have to try a topical steroid but can’t use it long term. I think the Aveeno has done wonders for her skin

My sister only uses goat milk products (soaps, lotions). She said it has done wonders for her.

I have it but it’s mild compared to many people. I used a topical steroid for awhile and it helped but I would rather have medication. I was prescribed prednisone one time for another issue I had and it wiped it out in a few days. It works crazy good for my skin issues like eczema but as we know it can’t be taken long-term.

Yep. The doctor put me on 21 day course of prednisone plus hydroxyzine. He warned it was a temporary relief and I’m now reaching that point. Hydroxyzine is one powerful sedative drug.

I agree. I take those injections every 3 weeks and it works well. I started out at every 2 weeks and moved to 3 weeks as I got better. It better at $1,900 per injection. Thank goodness for insurance.

Gluten (wheat) and dairy are common offenders.

Gluten (wheat) and dairy are common offenders.
Interesting to note that. Both my kids are celiac and my wife became gluten intolerant about 5 yrs back. That meant I ended up adapting to their dietary restrictions. I’m cheat so not 100% free of gluten, but pretty close.

I have had a second injection of Dupixent and have had neither positive or negative side effects. I am not being treated with it for eczema, though. It is expensive. The initial dose for me was $1334 and the second was over $500. It takes a couple of weeks to a month to start to be effective. It has not worked for me. I will give it one more month. My cost was reduced by insurance which paid $2200 for the first dose. I have not seen reimbursement for the second dose.

I was shocked by the cost of Dupixent. We have a high deductible plan so I guess we would hit the annual drug limit quick. It must be pretty new drug, but per my google searching it looks like there are a couple other similar monoclonal drugs available.

Cerave lotion to add ceramides back to skin. Also diet as several have mentioned. Microbiome plays a big role in autoimmune conditions. Everyone’s is unique and you can get tests but I would recommend just doing a reset by removing gluten, dairy, sugar and add in lots of raw vegetables (including nuts/seeds), fermented foods (kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurt), along with lean proteins. See how you feel after a couple of weeks. Worst case, it’s all healthy stuff and you’ll probably sleep better and feel generally better even if the eczema doesn’t improve.
