"The British Open". It is the oldest of golf's Major Championships, and is also the most decidedly different. They say that golf is not inherently fair anyway, and that can certainly be borne out in this tournament. There have been years when "the luck of the draw" actually took several major contenders out of the tournament before the weekend even began.

The weather can change from benign to near tropical storm conditions in just a short time. If you are among the unfortunate to be on the course during the bad weather, you will be at a SEVERAL stroke disadvantage. And, the bad weather is not in any way predictable, either. It could be on the afternoon of the first day, and then in the morning of the second day. So, if that is your part of the draw, you could easily already have taken a flight home before Saturday's play even got underway.

And, another way that Open golf venues are different, is rough. In many cases, this rough is not even grass. It can be small bushes, three foot tall brush, the dreaded gorse, diabolical pot bunkers, and strategically place small water hazards, just barely wide enough to claim your golf ball. (Just ask Jean Van de Velde.) In US Opens, getting into the rough will usually exact a one stroke penalty. Rough "over there" can be much worse. Those old Scots laugh about such stuff. "Yer'll nae card a guud score if'n ya don keep it outta da gorse, mate!" No wonder they hoist a few dozen pints after completing a round.

That reminds me of an old golf joke. What do you call a German golfer who just played a round in Scotland? A precise drunk.

Golf, the diabolical way it was originally intended. Buckle up and hunker down, or Ye might get blown off the course, or lost on it, never to be seen again. Enjoy!

The Open is proper golf, on proper courses, in proper weather.

So, golf everywhere else in the world is improper? Just curious, do you drive

an 1896 Daimler-Benz Velocipede, or did you upgrade to a modern car? Original is not always the best, or only option, of anything. Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?

:)
