ACC Basketball History

Some of our self-declared biggest basketball fans love to insist that we are historically “the worst” program in the ACC. A strange point for a Clemson fans to assert - repeatedly. There have been 20 teams in the ACC total. Of those teams, Clemson ranks 8th in tournament appearances. Despite competing in the toughest conference in basketball for much of the single bid NCAA tournament era, we are ahead of 12 other teams from the ACC historically. This was always an absurd assertion meant only to mock Clemson. That so many accept it as fact is shameful. But it is wildly untrue.

I’m very well aware of it. Why does it any sense to reference our standing during that period, when we were arguably the “worst” of those 8 teams, when discussing our standing within an 9, 12, 15, or 18 team league?

After all, that was roughly a decade ago and the ACC has expanded since then.

It was a direct reply to his comment. And making a broad assertion about our history is completely different than using an irrelevant portion of our history and comparing with current accomplishments. But I’m pretty sure you know both of these things.

You handled that well. Thank you. Hace you ever referrred to Clemson basketball history as “pathetic?” It’s a relevant question given the original post’s content.
If the early years don’t count anymore, Im happy to see a change in our measurement standards. That would mean we only look at about certain % of our history, right? Should we use SRS?
Again, appreciate the response.

great point. Going back to the last 3 years of the Oliver Purnell era and the expected Tourney appearance this season that will be 8 times in 18 years. That is more than half the time. More apperences in that span than historical better programs in Tobacco Road NC State and Wake Forest.

Clemson has the 5th best SRS in the ACC over that period. Not bad at all. I like these new standards of measurement. Great call out!
Louisville was 4th, which surprised me.
