I would consider myself an evangelical, and while I voted for him in the last two general elections, I've never voted for him in a primary, and won't this time either.
He says many of the right things, but it's so patently obvious - at least to me, apparently not to others - that it's just lip service and saying what people want to hear. He could not be much more NOT Christian than he is. He's never done or said anything that would lead someone to even remotely think he was a Christian. He may have said he believes in God or the Bible or whatever, and maybe he had Billy Graham on speed dial, but so did Bill Clinton! I know that only God knows the heart, but I also know that you'll know other believers by their fruit. Trump has no fruit. Rotten fruit, maybe. But none of any value.
I'm really hoping and praying that something happens between now and the primary that really cuts into his votes or removes him from the ballots entirely. Haley would be the best option, from what I'm reading from the polls lately. But I'd take Desantis, too. None of them are perfect, and I'm not looking for that. Nor am I looking for a spiritual leader. But would be nice to have someone who at least TRIED to live a good example in their lives. That is most definitely NOT Trump!

At this point, if they continue to support him, they admit they know what he is and they're just pretending to be conservative Republicans.

I don't want to get into semantics so I'll treat evangelicals, the religious right, and Christian nationalism interchangeably. As an outsider, they use religion as a cover for their beliefs. Name something important to them and it usually doesn't mesh with actual New Testament teachings. Instead of wanting religion to be separate from government, they want to use government to force their beliefs on other people.

Jesus came for "the Lost Sheep of Israel" and no one else. He said so himself.
I hope this rectifies a major misconception of yours about who and what a Christian is and is supposed to be.

Ya’ll making this complicated.
Trump was sitting in his Manhattan condo before launching his 2016 campaign and knew he couldn’t con the left cuz everyone in the northeast knew he was a deadbeat dirtbag.
American banks quit lending to him in 2001. Everyone reading this has better credit than trump. Dude is a deadbeat con artist and most of America left and right knew this pre 2014.
But he saw the right wing evangelicals as an easy target and he has been 100% correct. He was never pro life, never opened a bible, didn’t even know how to hold a bible upright.
He has an easy time conning these folks. It’s so easy it only takes a lazy effort on his part. Watch one of his rallies. He just talks junk like a middle school playground punk and he’s amazed the crowd buys into it. I think he’s been going to bed every night saying ### these rural right wing folks are dumber than I ever thought.

Trump is not alone among people who do not appear to be Christians.
Musicians Brian Welch (of Koran fame), Bob Dylan, Dave Mustain (of Metallica fame), Ozzy Osborne (of The Osbornes fame 😊), and Alice Cooper (another old time rocker) are all professed Christians who are not Bible thumpers.
Aside from that, evangicals don’t have to be supporters of only evangilecal Christian politicians. As you have observed, there are many many evangelical Christians who support Trump, despite the obvious that Trump himself is not an evangelical Christian.
Trump is not big on wars that enrich America’s military industrial crony capitalists. He is strongly opposed to flaccid drug enforcement policies since these have been categorically proven to be useless in reducing the surge of drug overdose deaths. There are many other policies that make Trump highly desirable for evangelical Christians, despite his ‘casual’ Christianity.
The takeaway here is that most evangelical Christians are mindless people who are oblivious to the secular world around them. Many evangelical Christians are highly intelligent, well informed people. These are the evangelical Christians who prefer Trump to the superficial Christians like Mike Pence, Joe Biden, and Barack Obama.
