FOX vs ESPN... How ESPN can win

ESPN needs to start making moves.

First thing is to protect your biggest asset THE SEC. The Big ten is moving quickly to becoming the premier collegiate athletic conference. FOX is running the Big ten. Without change, Fox will soon have the largest viewership, ie highest Revenue,,, ESPN can continue its dominance in the NCAA by bringing in FSU, Clemson, UNC and Miami to the SEC. They can easily forgive the GOR and exit fees for those 4 schools.

Then you take the remaining 10 ACC teams and look to add schools with premier Basketball programs. UCONN, Memphis, Temple, Villanova, Georgetown, Xavier... ETC

This does 2 things.
1. ESPN's SEC would have the most tier one athletic programs. (11) BAMA, UGA, TENN, FLORIDA, TEXAS, OK, CLEMSON, FSU, LSU, AUBURN, MIAMI... Compared to FOX's Big team tier one program: (8) USC, Oregon, Ohio state, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, Nebraska and mich state

2. The New ACC would be ESPN's secondary conference for filler football games similar to the BIG 12 being the secondary conference for FOX. IE games on played on ESPN2, ESPNU ESPN+ FS1 other streaming services etc, However the ACC could become the premier conference for ESPN during basketball season with more tier 1 basketball programs then the Big 12.
ACC B-ball tier 1: Duke, UVA, UCONN, NC state, NOVA, Georgetown etc
Big 12 b-ball tier 1: Kansas, Zona, West Va, Houston

Not a bad concept. But ESPN is not in a good financial place. Maybe cutting so many of their on air personalities is a step needed to pay additional school’s joining the SEC, or maybe it was needed just to survive and keep the doors open.

Well that’s certainly an interesting analysis! Could actually make sense.

Your observation about the actual health of ESPN is accurate….

But, I’m not sure the SEC leadership has the same business savvy as the B1G…

The SEC model is singularly focused on Football due to the ‘means of manufacturing’ (history, talent, weather, culture, etc). This is why they make it no secret that Football reigns supreme and to hell with Olympic sports (except the minimum number we HAVE to field and pay for).

SEC football is clearly the best in the nation and yet, the B1G contract is more lucrative despite the fact that football pays the bills.

Very interesting case study on those who play checkers while their counterparts are playing chess

I would much rather have ESPN go down in flames.

I think in 2025, the SEC TV contract surpasses BIG. BIG is currently paying out more, next year will both be around 90 million per school then in 25, the SEC jumps to close to 100 while the BIG stays where it currently is (the 90 in 24).

I would prefer ESPN go bankrupt.

ESPN wins when Disney sells them!!!

Then they can be a sports channel again and not a political channel!

Why exactly would the SEC pay the exit fees and GOR for FSU, Clemson, UNC and Miami? So the SEC can become good or keep up wiht the B1G? This is about football and money from football. The SEC doesn't need those additions to remain the dominate conference. You see the B1G threatening SEC football dominance anytime soon with the additions of Oregon and Washington?
