Had a copperhead encounter

three years ago, June 30 2019. I went to roll the trashcan up to the front street for pickup. When I moved the trashcan, it was all curled up under where the trashcan was. At first, I though it was a balled up towel that maybe a worker had left. As I was reaching down to pick it up, I happed to look where I was reaching and said oh crap and back jumped about three feet. Since their defense mechanism is to freeze and be totally still, I went to the storage room and got a shovel. He met his end that day. It was the wrong place to stop for some shade for him. Had I reached and touched him, he would have bitten.
The thing about copperheads is they are the snakes that like to cozy up near houses.

I had a mocassin encounter like that a few years back. Only

this one was under about two feet of water in the Cooper River. My fishing lure got hung up on an underwater snag. Thank goodness the water was pretty clear. Just as I was reaching into the water to retrieve my lure, I looked down, and this mocassin was lying there right next to the underwater snag.
Needless to say, I let the snag keep my lure. Them things were CHEEP compared to snake bite treatments.

had an interesting encounter a good while back when i was still fly fishing.was at the battenkil river which is about 15 or so miles from my house.it was dusk.had a white miller on the line and felt a bit of a tug when i made a back cast.brought it forward,and there was a bat on the hook.like you,i elected to skip trying to retrieve that particular fly.

Last copperhead I saw was exactly like that. I moved him down by our creek but he shocked the he’ll outta me
