Are we headed toward college athlete employment?

The more I listen to these athletic directors talk, the more I think they have largely concluded that is where this is headed. Thoughts?

How will workers comp work with injured football players?

NIL players should no longer have free tuition. That should be saved for the players who are not getting paid.

Probably. That's the easiest path to regulation. A players union that negotiates and establishes a market.

Athletes become employees. They will be paid directly by the university. They will sign contracts. They will unionize. Benefits will be collectively bargained.

Sadly it's the only way to control it now. But keep in mind, it will be All athletes. Then you'll get into labor disputes between the sports, and equally for female athletes. And with any government or private industry, they'll be corruption. It's going to cost too. Will have to have a ginormous HR staff.

And there's no way you can say, it's only going to apply to football.

Flip side, it'll be good for baseball, softball, volleyball, rowing etc that don't receive a full ride. It'd be some outstanding baseball. Then how long would it take for it to be "kid become an employee in high school if they commit and sign a contract?

How long before stadiums empty out?

I think we may be. There's absolutely no rules now. None. The sport is totally lawless.

I think we are already there. All that's missing is unionization and collective bargaining.

You mean officially declaring CFB as Minor League Ball?

Yes and at that point CFB dies and we call it a different league.

IMO should have its own league - similar to how the minor leagues are set-up now where if someone is drafted out of HS they can either go to school for 3 years or go pro.

Should be simple as that but of course you have college licensing that's gonna still be attached to the teams for as long as possible until the money dries up.

league made up of non-student professionals, completely abandoning the student-athlete model and all academics. It will be a minor league for the NFL. Most schools will continue with the old traditional way. It will be the end of the great sport of college football as we have always known it.

Everyone provided good responses but no one addressed how workers comp works for football?

With a concussion happening on seemingly 1 out of 10 possessions, how in the world will this work? Long term health insurance?

teams made up of professional athletes whose only relation to the school is a paycheck ... the Alabama's and Michigans etc... the 40-50 "elites" we keep hearing about. Then we'll have a lower tier of colleges who will use the student-athlete model, making up the rest.

I truly don't care anymore. I have zero control on that front. I'll concentrate on things I can make a difference in.
