dabo interview about portal

The more DABO talks to the media, the more and more he proves that he just doesnt get it anymore. He stated that had the one high school DE not decommitted, that Clemson would be done and not looking for a portal DE? Does he still not realize what a glaring need we have for better talent and more depth at DE? A freshman will be a couple years away from contributing. I guess he is just content with winning 7-8 game a year while waiting on freshman to develop. Adding one DE is great but doesnt help the depth, we have talent defiencies all over at LB,DE, running back, etc and we are apparently only looking to add 1 or 2 portal players? This logic just doesnt make sense, whether you like the portal or not, it here and all our opponents are loading up while we just sit here. At QB, just think of the talent dropff once Klubnik leaves. There are no longer any 5 star QB'S even giving us a second look. This playoff game saturday will prove to us either way where we are as a program and erase all doubt about our situation.

Depth at QB and DE is a concern for sure. I actually think Jamal Anderson and Dee Crayton could turn out to be good LBs, once they get some more PT.

I’m not bashing the guy but I don’t have any confidence in Vizzina. I hope he turns out to be spectacular even if he only starts 1 season, but I wouldn’t be shocked at all if Denson jumps in front of him before Cade leaves in 2026?

agree but it takes a really talented QB to win today . look at our best seasons , had Watson, Lawrence, and look at the contenders this year, they all have not good , but great QB play. The games that we have won this year and looked good have been big games for Klubnik, who is a former 5 star talent. we just dont have any more of this talent left when he is gone.

Ego and Pride will be the downfall of Dabo. He has to change his view on the portal issue. The roster is no where near as talented as it once was.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So youre suggesting we should cut current starters and replace with transfers?***

Probably not smart to say that before the DE commits. Basically saying if we got our first choice we wouldn’t be interested in you.

yes, he is just acting like he is clueless. His coaching this year has been baffling as well. he just seems like he has lost it and does not care anymore. I get it that the game is not the same and probably not fun anymore but something has to change with him .

as in scholarships available. We're allowed 85 max until July 1. The ACC has yet to decide if it will cap scholarships at 85 as the SEC did. We're currently at least 87. Now, I do think it's likely we lose at least 3 more to the portal, including one DE, but until you know for sure on these things, you can't add where you don't have room

Dabo has to cut the charity cases and make room. If you wait any longer the best portal guys will be committed to our opponents. not sure how you get your math? we had 7 decommitts and only added 1 portal player? How does that math work? Did Dabo award more walk ons scholarships or what?

keep defending the stubborness of DABO dude, I am a lifelong Clemson fan , but while we argue about it, our rivals just beat our ### in recruiting and today added another 5 star from the portal. but lets just wait for room and do nothing about our roster and talent issues.

You mean add depth?

Some guys seem to think you can just go get unlimited transfers and that they’re willing to come and be “depth”, i.e. backups. We are near the scholarship limit unless we have more transfer out.

The reason some teams bring in so many transfers is because they’re replacing numerous transfers and/or culling the current roster. Some programs are building teams through transfers, but who are those elite teams?

We’re not going to cut players and we don’t have a team built with transfers or a lot of guys transferring out. And too, it always begs the question- if we don’t cut guys from the roster and take chances on transfers - what starters would we replace? And just as importantly - let’s assume you could change any player from this year - how would that transfer prevented the 3 losses this year? Our 3 losses haven’t come about because we don’t have portal kids.

Dabo has stated he will use the portal when we have an absolute need. But he’s not going to cut guys or demote guys just to promise a transfer a starting spot. We either have a need for an instant playing time guy - like WR and DE - or the transfer will need to be willing to accept that he will be given an opportunity to develop and compete for playing time. It doesn’t appear most transfers are about that.

Depth is not something transfers want to be, so some of our fans need to understand it’s not like you just go out there and sign backups because we need depth at a particular position. That’s not the way it works. Depth is built with recruiting. Again, we’re not dropping or demoting anyone and frankly who would that be anyway?

The portal is not the be all to end all. The best teams in the country may have some transfers but overall the elite teams are built with recruiting HS.

well speaking of high school recruiting you must mean our 4th ranked ACC class? Clemson is the only team except the armed service academies to not use the portal. unless you are going to sign top 5 classes year in year out, then you must utilize the portal.

....if college football is about pouring into a young man so that he is a better man when he leaves. The sad fact is, college football is not about that anymore. Georgia has a 41% graduation rate, and more schools will follow as wins = money.

What Dabo cannot understand, and I love him for it, is that college football is now more than ever, all about the all mighty dollar and doing what ever it takes to win a national championship. It is no longer about developing young men into great people.

Dabo feels a moral and ethical obligation to young kids to help them be men, you can only do that to a certain extent with an upper class man that transfers in as most are mercenaries looking for money and playing time. It is sick and twisted and mostly why I have stopped watching College football (no rules/ NFL lite) all together.

I find it ironic and sick, that athletes wanted NIL and the Portal because they felt that they were being exploited. Now NIL and the Portal allows some so called College Institutions (FSU, UGA etc), to basically sacrifice the future of most of their players at the feet of the god of wins, championships and dollars. That trend will only continue to get worse as fan bases and alumni push coaches and institutions to "be like them" so that "we can win championships." Which is basically happening right now at Clemson.

Well to be fair we've definitely had plenty of freshmen defensive linemen be immediate impact players so you never know.

had is the operative word here, that kind of talent is not coming to Clemson anymore. at one time , yes DABO had a defensive line full of 5 stars studs, not even close to the case now .

We have 9+ wins for 14 years in a row. Second to Alabama. For uneducated coot fans, that means we’re one the two most consistent winners in the country.

By the way, we just won the conference and are among only 12 teams vying for the title. But you know that, right?

Where is uSC playing Saturday?
