Did not know Kansas was playing that night, but DID enjoy another special game there as an almost teen with friends. Wake came in ranked in at least teens as I recall (14 on mind but that was also the # of their QB). Mustached QB Jay Venuto was talk coming in (ended up being ACC Player of Year, but our D obviously frustrated him - I think game on TV too - seemed like a cold morning turned into perfect football day at the then Valley and on the hill)- wish I could recall the bedsheet banner hung from the apartments as you came in off 76 and looped up onto Clemson Blvd in those days, but it seemed every one was very sharp and usually on point (as here) in predicting a Tiger victory (though unlikely, if ANYONE kept weekly photos of those, please post, along with some accolades to and identities of the authors/creators - part of what made Clemson special in those days). Despite the Deacon hype (just looked and they beat Georgia at Athens along with UNC and Auburn that year too and went to a bowl for 1st time in 30 years but lost to LSU). D was dominant - Jeff Davis got a pick six, Geathers took another to the one and there was a third INT as well - outstanding all around. They went on road the next two weeks to beat UNC, then Notre Dame (but lost to ##### and Baylor to close year) - good stuff
Would have been even better to have been a bit older and stayed for Kansas concert

I had a more pleasant situation the first time I got a "senior" discount...
Dec 10, 2024, 10:03 PM
|
|
I had recently turned 60...I walked into a buffet style restaurant where you pay when you go in. I noticed a sign that said, "Senior discount 25%"
I asked the young lady at the counter (she wasn't a kid, probably early 30's)..."What age qualifies for the senior discount?"
She says 60...I say, "OK, I'll take it!" and she says, "You're not 60!" I say, "Do you want to see my ID?"
She very indignantly exclaims, "NO! But if you claim you're 60, I guess I"ll let you have the discount!"
Now...that made my day!

I didn't grow up in the 50's or 60's but I sure know the majority of the popular songs from them.
Heck I even know most of the crooner songs from the 40's.
I will confess I can't name many artists or songs after the new millennia but that is more likely to be expected, IMO.

Is being safe guy. We had a joke when I was in my 40's about being chosen as "Safe Guy" as part of our group. Safe Guy is when you are in a bar and you realize you are too old to be there because the young cute ladies come up to you with their camera and ask you to take their picture. They do so because you look old enough to never be considered as someone that would successfully hit on them and therefore safe to approach. Safe Guy...this should be in a beer ad like real men of genius.
You'll feel old when you realize you are "Safe Guy".

I was never much of a Duran Duran listener, but look for their 2022 appearance on Austin City Limits - still out there with pretty much same members for 40 something years. They sounded tight - actually kindled a little fandom in me.
They’ve modernized a bit - saw that the bassist is using a Dingwall.

There was a young couple (maybe 30 or so) sitting behind us at the game Saturday night. After the National Anthem, the guy asked us why the flag was at half mast. We answered “Pearl Harbor “. He looked at us really confused and said “what’s that?” He even asked us what year it happened later in the game. He had no idea. 🙁

I guess that I should really feel old considering you were not alive the one time that I specifically remember hearing that song. I was driving back to Clemson from Durham after Duke beat Kansas for their first National Championship. The radio station had a special 2 for Tuesday with Kansas "Dust in the Wind" and Mitch Ryder "Devil with the Blue Dress On."

Crickets. No one knew it. My previous choices resonated with everyone. I felt like the old man in the room even though I’m the life of he party. It happens. Wait til you hit your 50’s!
