for the 2nd biggest bowl to the national championship have a hard time selling tickets.
Florida and Louisville in the freaking Sugar Bowl had 22,000 unsold seats last year.
It's a shame.

Except for the biggest four or so bowls, who makes money? It seems to me everyone involved loses money. The city, the teams, the sponsor... I don't get it.
Does El Paso need the Sun Bowl, the Orlando need the, does Tampa need the.. does Memphis, Birmingham, Charlotte, Nashville... I really don't get it.

But then you can actually see the game at an angle that makes it clear where the runner just ran for 2 yards or 12 yards.
I much rather like looking up at the scoreboard after the play is over to account for the terrible depth perception that a lot of stadium seating provides.

The good bowl games make a lot of money from TV advertisement. Doesn't matter if there are 22k empty seats. They still get several million for a 30second ad. Ticket sales are just a small portion of the revenue.

Not several million.
The Super Bowl was like $4MM last year with 20 times the audience.
OB could probably be had in the range of $150K or probably as a pacakage across multiple games for alot less.

the assistance of a holiday to help. Same as 2012 Orange bowl when Clemson played on Wednesday. Bowl Execs are too dumb to realize that bowls games should be played on Holidays and weekends.

if they didn't find some value in it. How many teams ever turn down a bowl invitation???
Same for those who put on the bowls. They make money.
It's no different that a profit-making company going to a trade exhibition. It can cost a lot of money. And more often than not you don't "make" enough money in sales at a show. But in the long run you determine there is value. With college football, it's not hard to figure repeated bowl appearances impress recruits AND donors AND prospective students to some degree.
The only problem is there are too darn many.

the local/area community.
i know a bit about the orange bowl committee. it's a year round organization that does legacy projects with local parks[moore being one], sponsor youth organizations, scholarships et al
the organization created the bowl many years ago to bring business, tourism, trade to southern florida. i've seen the total financial impact listed ~ $300mil.
can't speak for all the other bowls, but i imagine they are built with similar missions/visions.
i agree they aren't as special as they used to be because of number, but the communities get a chance to show off their wares for business & visitor alike then give back to the local communities in varying forms of support.

to drop on a trip to Miami or wherever... The bowls aren't THAT much more broken than 2003, and you couldn't give Clemson fans enough tickets to the Peach Bowl that year...

schools receive invitations annually, even though some may have had mediocre seasons.
Thus, fans are having to decide if they want to spend every Christmas/New Year's holiday at bowl games. Add that to the rising costs to attend, and attendance can suffer.
It reminds me of an old saw: too much of a good thing...blah blah blah!

level is lower. When it was hard to get in one you were jacked to go, especially if your team had not been to one in a while. Now decent teams go EVERY year, even when they are 6 and 6. Hard to shell out the bucks to go to a bowl game every year after paying the high dollars the schools want from you during the year now. Back in the 90's tickets were $20 a game. CRAZY now!
