Yesterday’s game

Was decided by a very good coaching move by the Miami staff. When the second half began Miami went to a different offensive approach to the game that really worked. On offense they kept their big man inside around the basket and had the other four players spread out just behind the three point line. That forced Clemson to bring their defensive players all outside away from the basket. With some breaks to the basket and good passing they were able to get a one on one in almost every play. It worked the entire half. They never strayed from that approach a single time. It also preventing the Tigers from getting the ball quickly up the court and scoring easily. I’m anxious to see if the Tiger coaches learned anything from this.

The Miami coach is good. He’s coached a ton and seen alot. He also has a good sense of when to call a timeout to break a bad stretch.

There was a number of timeouts called in that game by both coaches in the closing minutes.
Clemson has a lot of time now to regroup. Several days to prepare for the very tough trip to Chapel Hill.
The guys who missed playing time because of injuries really struggled yesterday. The extra practice time will really benefit them. It was apparent yesterday that Hemmengway isn’t 100 0/0. Being the Tar Heel resident That I am I’m hoping for a lot better performance from the good guys.

Galloway probably had one of his better games. Alex only played 15 minutes but we're simply a better team with him on the bench. When we get into a situation we need 3s, bring him in. Or for free throws.
Great assessment on 2nd half. I thought Miami was sloppy in the first half. They'd just threw up shots before getting into an offense. Two very even teams.

Yep. The first 4-5 minutes of the second half did us in.

Your 2nd statement is right on. Jim Larrinaga did not allow Clemson to get any large spreads or his team to experience any major lapses of scoring. Brad did not follow those principles in the game yesterday or at BC game. He allowed the opposition to go on runs while Clemson was in a scoring drought. That digs the hole too deep to overcome. Chase Hunter was not a scoring threat in either game and Tyson was shut down in 2nd half vs Miami.

I thought their half court traps were very effective as well. We did get a few gimmes but they turned us over as well.
I like their coach seems to have a very high basketball IQ.
I would like to see more of a full court press on occasion just to change things up. Maybe I’m missing it but seems we just head back to the other end with little pressure on getting the ball in the front court.

Miami coach's praises as one of the best in the biz, noting that he and Brownell have each won 116? ACC games thru the years which apparently is a lot.

We don’t respond well to pressure. Our ball security is not good. Seems to be very easy to slap the ball out of our players hands or take it away on the dribble. We don’t pressure other teams that way at all. I’d like to see us at least use the half court trap sometimes. When I played years ago that was a very effective weapon.

Zackery picked Halls? pocket at the half-court line in the 2nd half I wanted to come out of my skin.
Turnovers are just maddening to watch in any setting.
Listening from the car, it just seemed Miami had an answer for everything Clemson did. So maybe coaching was the difference.
But coaches cant make baskets for the kids and they cant protect the ball.

So true. Wish our coaches knew that it is ok to get a rebound and ok not to throw the ball away, Our staff should learn from, our continued mistakes and change it. Not so far. Our coaches don't seem to understand or change anything.

Thanks Forrest. I watched the first half, but went to a friend’s house for dinner. And though he “…was dvr’ing the game for us to watch the second half when I got there…”, he had the game on live and I walked in with 6 min to go and we were down by 6 (as I recall).
This morning, I looked at the stats and saw we shot well, we scored almost 30 more points than my neighbor’s Vols did while beating Auburn 46-43. However, we were outrebounded by almost 10 - with 7 of those being off rebounds, and though we only had 16 fouls to Miami’s 13, we only shot 9 FTs to their 26.
My assumption was that they must have driven to the basket a LOT - and were fouled.
Look like a good game to go back and study the tape for our coaching staff.
On the positive side, someone mentioned playing a weak schedule and non competitive games being s negative. Playing tougher games such as this should be a plus. Especially losing it, hopefully we should get better from it!
GO TIGERS!!!

Miami is an outside in team and if they shoot well and get rebounds, they are good team. A look at the game and a look at the stats show us that they beat us to the ball on the offensive board and that is what gave them extra chances and cost us the game.
