Anybody else losing enthusiasm for the coming football season?

I've never been a super-fan - keeping up with recruiting, who the star players will be, etc - but I've always kept up with Clemson football and college football in general, and basically counted down the days til the opener. But with all the changes going on - NIL, conference mess, and so on - at this point now, I basically don't care. Don't get me wrong - I still want Clemson to excel and make it to the playoffs again and win another natty - but it's on the backburner. Definitely not the priority it used to be. It's not nearly what it used to be and never will be again, and I get that. But I'll always miss that and glad I got to experience it before it became whatever it's becoming now. Old guy rant over.

Go Tigers!

Same for me. Went from being a season ticket holder to attending a few games to watching on TV. I find things are easier to accept when I am not investing a ton of money on a product which is obviously not being managed properly.

I think that is the problem many of us have with the whole thing, I think Dabo IS trying to manage the situation properly and he gets crucified by the media and some fans for being out of touch by not using the portal or NIL more liberally. I think what all this proves to me is that myself and many posters on TNet are not really interested in a semi-pro Clemson team which has to deal with constant transfers and bickering about money. Now it is a true arms race. I just read where Oregon will have all the NIL money they need so Phil Knight can BUY a Natty before he croaks. Welcome to the new age of college football. The genie will never go back into the bottle now!

Not only that, but when the fans of the game are spending a lot of money and using up a lot of their life that made something good of the college sports that they loved but has never been given a vote on why they love college sports so much. But the rich guys come in and take it over, they then keep adjusting it until they have ruined it, and the fact of the matter is they don't care bc it was never about the love of the game for them, it was only about making as much profit as they could right now...

The combination of the NIL and the transfer portal have permanently removed a chunk of the reason why college football was my favorite sport. I don't follow it as much as I have since I was a kid.

I follow Clemson soccer and basketball more than ever. And my enthusiasm for baseball has gone back up now that Neff has righted a wrong. But college football feels so dystopian these days.

(I know other sports have tampering and rampant transfers, but football is where the money is and it's changed it much more noticeably.)

Not in the least. I do try to keep up with the goings on in NIL/portal/realignment and have my opinions on it, but I'm as excited today about Clemson football as I was last year and the year before. The NIL/portal has absolutely zero to do with me. Once they start running down the hill, it's game on and I'm all about it. I'll tailgate and watch as I've always done. I'll root for Clemson no matter what conference they're in, and that will never change.

This - exactly. I don't understand why people let something they have no control over ruin something they love. Most of us see the problems stemming from NIL or the portal. When Georgia and Clemson kick off on August 31 - it's Clemson v Georgia. Who cares about that other stuff?

with college football prior to NIL and the transfer portal.

Some posts here make it sound so idyllic, as if these guys were only about the love of the game and devotion to school. Some were, but plenty have always been about what a school could give them in terms of future career opportunities. College football has been big business for a long time, it's just that players are now able to get a piece of the financial pie.

Scholarships have always been transactional. Its just that now the transactions (openly) include money. The same people who have made decisions over the entirety of their adult lives based in some part on money, are now surprised and angered that an 18 might do that.

Georgia uses NIL funds and portal, Clemson very minimal and therefore may not be able to keep up with the elite teams anymore without the elite players who want to get paid.

I get your point, but to think that during the game if UGA manages to beat Clemson easily it will only further distance myself from this new landscape of college football.

Phil Knight words could be a harbinger for the downfall of college athletic and the precursor to the new minor league of football... at least at the highest level and that is a shame.

I like your enthusiasm, and there was a time, for a long, long time, I was that way. I must confess that it doesn’t bring on the enthusiasm it once did. I still love the Tigers and want to win big every game, but the ride gets longer every week, all games are on TV now, and my chair is very comfortable and the air conditioning is quite tempting. I’ll be at all home games this year, but I’ll probably rethink it next year. Go Tigers!

enthusiasm for Clemson football because Dabo has changed. I'm the exact opposite. Clemson football under Dabo is probably the only thing left about college football I see as worth watching. The absurdity of what the sport has become completely disinterests me, save for one extremely successful coach in Upstate South Carolina who is clinging on to some semblance of what it was originally supposed to be. I am not sure I'll turn on a game if/when Dabo leaves, if the sport keeps going the way it is.

Well, that's what made them push so hard to be paid at the college level, they become stars while just in HS, but just give them a minute, they will start demanding they get a cut of everything sold at the HS games, and a judge will find a blooper in the law that forces HS management to pay them!!! The demand of money to be paid to students for playing their favorite game will lead to sports being banned from HS and college level...

My fantasy football road trip this year includes more lower division games than FBS games. This is the first year for that and is a reaction to what you have posted.

Georgia at Alabama and Michigan at Washington are included as are two late season games when the lower division guys get into the early playoff games, but that’s it.

Clemson, even with the game against Georgia, did not make the schedule … such is the algorithm. Yes … were this actual and not fantasy I would be at a Clemson game.

Grown-up nerds are financing the destruction of college football.

Look at NASCAR over the last 20 years. I used to know the track schedule by heart. I never "watched" races, but did have them on in the background while I did other things. And could always see several replays of the "big wreck". Now, I have no idea where is the race? Who are the drivers? Or what is the ultimate goal of NASCAR?

I used to could tell you the names of each starter at Clemosn on both sides of the ball. I could tell you a little about each one's family...background. But now I have no idea.

Death by 1000 cuts.

100% I think a big part of it is I'm getting older and having other responsibilities. But I also just am not as excited for college football in general. When I was in school we all lived and died by Clemson football, and football in general, but now it just seems like the wrong people are in charge and the sport is changing so fast it's hard to keep up with. Maybe one day football will separate from the NCAA and become basically like the G League for the NFL, and maybe all of the issues will be solved. But who knows... maybe my days of being a diehard college football fan are behind me and I'll just be a follower of the sport but start focusing more on basketball and baseball.

Once it starts costing a monthly mortgage payment to take your two sons to a college football game, something has to give.

It's great for the players that NIL is going to be compensating them, and that soon they'll be paid directly. (Not my opinion necessarily, but the point is it benefits the players).

I'm glad the coaches get paid well. In fact, they've never been paid better.

I'm proud of my university and always will be. I'm glad Clemson has prospered as a result of the last 10 years of on the field results.

The fans are the only ones on the red side of this equation. CFB is turning from an in-person spectator sport to a TV only spectator sport for the average person. As that happens, some of the passionate connection inevitably starts to fade, and over time, you have less enthusiasm than before.

Adapt and overcome the adversities. “Liking it” has nothing to do with it, it has changed and will continue to change, like it or not.

There’s not much that is as sacred as Clemson football. Shame on you. Man card revoked.

I cannot wait to jam into lot 5 and setup my tent, generator, TV’s, food spread, and bar. It’s not JUST a game. It’s when 80k pack into a stadium with like minds while another 60k continue to tailgate outside. Many stay at the ESSO. It’s about getting together with our Clemson family and fellowship. Meeting up with friends and family we’ve known for 45+ years and enjoying the day. From TigerWalk to the second tailgate after the game waiting for traffic to clear, it’s the best way to spend a Saturday.

It doesn’t matter if we’re 15-0 with a Natty or 0-12. I fell in love with Clemson the first time my father dragged me to a clemson game in 1976. I gave my whole heart, I do not take it back. Win, lose, or draw. We are Clemson Family. Maybe you’ve forgotten how special that is.

Alot of us in the same boat. All the folks being for paying play left one important piece of the equasion out and that is the fans that want to watch genuine college kids and not so knock off version of the NFL. It's not what I am charged up to watch.

Like you I have gone from being at most home games, to one or two a year, to only watching on TV. I don't want to watch a bunch or drama queens quibbling over contracts, hold outs, etc. They might want to pay for a winning team, but I really wonder longterm, who will still be watching. Interesingly enough, the more money or more education (beyond and BS/BA or in life experience) you have the less likley you will be of being a fan of college football. The peak interest years are between 35-44 years and then interest drops dramatically.

...my enthusiasm likewise began waning during the Covid season and hasn't stopped.

Last yr was the first time in 30 seasons that I didn't watch every single game. It's been 3 seasons since I attended a game. I was a season ticket holder for about 5 years until 2007. I graduated in 1996.

NIL / pay for play kind of sucks but I do wonder if things will be different if we are still a playoff and championship contender.

The down years + bad ACC competition + NIL is a bad combo IMO

"I love this place, I've got a spot already picked out where I want 'em to put me when I die - up there on that ole hill near the stadium. I want to be there so I can hear all them people cheering my Tigers on Saturdays; then I won't have to go Heaven; I'll already be there."- Frank Howard

My enthusiasm is about where it was in the late nineties and early two thousands. I found other things to do.

There’s not much that is exciting about seeing who can buy the best football team.

I believe that Universities have lost their way. It’s become money, money, money, money, money, money.
Universities are built by, more or less, LOCAL DOLLARS and LOCAL LOYALTY. There ARE NOT, other than a few exceptions, large amounts of money coming into Clemson or any other University from far away. My feeling is that Universities are forgetting to pay attention “to the ones that brung’em” and those that brung’em are beginning to notice.

Can the Universities survive without the loyalty and patronage of us? Maybe, maybe not? Seems like a stupid bet, an unnecessary risk driven by greed run amok.

NASCAR took a similar gambit. It didn’t work out.
