That looks like a bunch of ankle injuries just waiting to happen. Is first base collisions that big of a problem?

It doesn’t happen often, but when it happens it can be extremely serious. Once the opposing team’s first baseman collided with my batter/base runner. The first baseman left in an ambulance. A college coach friend of mine lost his ace pitcher for a month this year after a collision in the opening game of the year.
Most collisions can be avoided by learning proper technique, but in the heat of the moment, technique often goes out the window.
Just the same, I’m not a fan of double bases for college players. It is more appropriate for youth ball where the players are far more inexperienced.

Steeplechase. I have seen a lot of runners crash into, slip off of,while trying to jump over it...and if that isn't enough there is a small pool they fall into and could potentially drown....

The rules seem a bit complicated. We have seen a few plays in Clemson games where collisions occurred. Usually it’s a pitcher getting to the bag awkwardly and getting stepped on by the runner. A good 1st baseman knows where to position the foot to avoid the runner. I suppose there’s a benefit for a catcher trying to throw out the runner on a bunt or dropped 3rd strike.

That is one of the most ignorant things I have ever seen, and for that reason it will be coming to a ball park near you.

Its a bigger problem at lower ages... something many of us in Little leagues would be highly in favor of. I dont think there is a downside really. It is most helpful when the ball is overthrown and the 1B has to go back over the bag to catch it.. more room for the runner to go hit the bag and get safely by. Probably dont really need it in college where 1Bs are on the very edge of the bag already but I dont think it hurts anything.

I don't think that's necessary. I've played a lot of baseball and never had a collision at first base.
There was once in batting practice when I hit a ball to the infield and ran to first. I got there simultaneously with the ball. The first baseman had a habit of kicking off the bag just as he caught the ball and when he did, his foot came up and the spikes on his shoes made contact with my leg.
I still have the scar where the spike cut my kneecap to the bone.

It's been around in softball for a long time.
I think it's legal in youth baseball like Little League, too, but never saw them being used.

There's literally no downside to it. If baseball wasn't obscenely resistant to obvious positive changes for the sake of "tradition" it would be a better sport. The extended first base creates a more reasonable bathpath for batters and reduces injury risk for absolutely no downside.

I played baseball until I was 32 and coached for 30 years. Only saw two collisions during that time.

I guess I’ll be the first to state the obvious.
More collisions happen at second base than first base.
At least from what I’ve seen.
And what about colliding at home? Is there gonna be two plates in the future?
What about two outfield walls so defenders don’t run full speed into the hard one?

When a pitcher is covering first he is running trying to catch the ball and stepping on the base at the same time. The pitcher and runner usually arrive at the same time resulting in the occasional collision. I think it's a good idea. Doesn't seem to be any downside.

The pointy heads who never played sports are attempting to eliminate all contact related injuries in all sports. Thus, every sport will eventually be changed drastically, or eliminated, which is actually their goal and has been all along.
