the cops smelled marijuana smoke, there was an illegal substance in the car (regardless of the amt.), there was a gun reported stolen in the car (a felony in most areas)
You're right. They were completely innocent.

I believe him. It wasn't that much pot and how were they supposed to know that the gun was stolen?

This article deals strictly with the legal part of the situation. Coach Saban will administer punishment and do what he thinks best. These guys have already done some community service for instance Robinson is completed some 26 hours of ride-alongs with the Tuscaloosa Police Department on weekend evening shift so I believe.
Bottom line. There are people that are going to criticize coach Saban on every issue no matter what he does

Bama open with USC and Ol Miss

No way he suspends them for the Ol Miss game. Ride alongs, really, that is his community service. That's probably signing autographs so the cops can say they know a future NFL player. I'm sure Alabama practice is way worse than a ride along, I think I did that on a Boy Scout trip to earn a patch. If the kid is rolling around high with a stolen gun there is not much the cops are going to show him that he has not already seen. It is not like taking a preppy rich kid to the ghetto. I agree with PTI sentence mentioned but atleast make the man pick up some trash or something crappy. If they start off 2-1 they will still get into the playoff. They might get in with 2 losses bc they are the all mighty Bama.

That idiot wouldn't have done nothing to ruin their lives, they did what they did all by their selves. Next time they catch construction workers DUI, let them go bc they worked most of their lives working in the bitter heat and cold making a living to support their families!!!

IMO there should be consequences proportional to the crime.

First this is pretty much a victimless situation,
Second, allegedly the players do not have previous criminal convictions.
From a legal standpoint, seems some sort of plea or PTI with 100 hours community service and probation fits the crimes. Even the process of going through a legal process could provide some benefit as a deterrent. ( I sure as heck don't like judges and courthouses.)
From an Alabama team standpoint, Saban should suspend the players for 3-4 games and put them on a last chance.
The players were young dumbazzes. Some significant course correction is unquestionably needed to help these young men understand consequences for their decisions & actions.
Harsh penalties really serve no purpose given the nature of the crimes.

And, no punishment will certainly correct their future actions.

Can't report stolen weed unless in CO, WA etc.
Seriously - there were legal and team consequences in my original posts.
Regrading the stolen gun, if there was evidence the players stole the gun or other stolen property, then sure the situation is totally different. Perhaps one of the guys in the back seat slid the gun underneath the seat. These guys were not charged.

no way a credible program allows this to happen. if i got pulled over and had weed and guns, trust me, there would be a huge problem. and the owner/ceo of our company would fire me - no question. its totally cool to support your team and coach, but common sense should dictate here. i'm not comparing this to baylor because of the sexual assault aspect. but, unregistered guns?? come on dude. were cam and his buddy just exercising their 2nd amendment rights??
