Talk to me about Freezers.

We are looking at buying some sort of freezer to go in our garage (UDP not climate controlled). I'd prefer an upright freezer for space/accessibility issues but I'm open minded on that point. There is a 46 inch wide space where an upright would fit well. Height/depth not a huge consideration.
Between Costco, hunting, some bulk meat sales a local butcher does, and looking at purchasing a 1/4 cow or pig, we need a decent bit of freezer space.
Any thoughts on what to look for or avoid? I assume like all appliances I want to avoid Samsung and LG. Most of the upright freezers I see are "frost free." Some articles are telling me that these can impact food quality over time. Any experience with these? How big does it need to be to handle all my meat?

I've heard to get a "garage ready" freezer or fridge if it's going to be in the

garage. Not sure if this is a sales gimmick or not. STUPOSIDLEY.........the high heat in the summer, and especially the cold in the winter, will cause the compressor to fail faster. We have a regular fridge in the garage, but got such a good deal on it we just went ahead and bought it. 4 years in and still runs fine.
For freezers HIGHLY recommend an upright, if you can find one. Chest freezers are cheaper, but you will find long lost steaks in them more often, at the bottom. Upright gives you access to everything easier, so stuff tends not to get "lost" like in the bottom of a chest freezer.

I was given an upright freezer by a coworker who retired in the mid-90s.

She was widowed and was moving back to her hometown and didn't want to haul the freezer back with her. She bought it in 1968 when she moved to Rock Hill, gave it to me around 1995, and we kept it in our shed outside until I gave it away in 2017. It worked perfectly the entire time I had it and I ran into the person I gave it to maybe two years ago and it was still working perfectly and was still in their garage. Wasn't frost-free so I did have to defrost every couple of years or so, but it was a true champion of the highest American quality.
Your new-fangled modern-day freezers may fail from being in a garage or shed, but the freezers that defeated the Germans at Pearl Harbor will probably run forever.
MAKE FREEZERS GREAT AGAIN.

Inlaws 1942 Westinghouse fridge still working

Known wife for 25 years now. Yikes.....anyway.......that fridge has been in that lake house almost as long as Lake Murray has existed. In 25 years they've been through 3 secondary fridges. They have to defrost it, but it works like a champ keeping beer cold.
My grandparents got a brand new Westinghouse "ice box" in 1936 as a wedding present. It died in around 2010. Also a memorable beer fridge.
Ask a showroom salesman why they can't make fridges that last and they will all say, as trained, well, the defrost mechanism is impossible to build to last that long. To which I ALWAYS reply, then sell me a fridge without defrost, and I will defrost it manually and use it for 80+ years. Crickets. ALWAYS.
If they're a GOOD salesman, they will then invoke the "refrigerant" laws, and how new fridges won't last because of new refrigerant laws. To which I reply I have no freaking clue the refrigerant in a 1940 fridge, BECAUSE IT"S NEVER LEAKED.
This was almost identical to dad's fridge: https://youtu.be/KRlhyNqvpHM?si=aL2R6IlpSkYpOepO

Yeah, it's like your AC unit in tour house

AC removes heat from your house fine, but the colder the air outside, the harder time it has exchanging heat. This is why below about 40 degrees most electric HVAC's will heat up coils to provide heat as the AC mechanism is not efficient below about 40 degrees. Main reason I love gas heat.
And a fridge will have trouble keeping contents cool as the garage dips into the 40's. We have insulated garage doors though and coldest our garage gets is about 50 degrees. Summer though, it can reach well over 100 degrees, especially with the heat of car engines adding to the outside air temp.

A non-garage ready will almost always have issues in the cold

We had an older fridge in the garage. When that thing had issues before it ultimately died, the tech who came out to see if it could be saved told us that the colder garage climate will cause the controller board to kick off the self-defrost cycle more often - which is why your freezer loses cold in the winter. You can do one of a handful things -
*- Buy a "garage ready" fridge and freezer where they've modified (or in some cases removed) the self-defrost features of the controller. I love paying extra for things with "less features." *- Buy just a freezer that doesn't have self-defrost. *- There's a heater pack that they sell which is intended to keep the controller at a temperature closer to indoors so it's not constantly triggering its self-defrost cycle. I have no idea if this works or not. *- Find an old fridge/freezer combo on eBay and use that. Something from the late 70's or early 80's when they were still built as brick shithouses, serviceable and without self-defrost. My parents had an old Philco/Ford fridge/freezer combo that lasted #### near forever, even in the garage.
Anything you get without the self-defrost will need to be manually defrosted once per year, which is an annoyance. So pick your poison.

Get that. It keeps all the cold air in instead falling out putting frost on everything since it's humid AF in the south.
Ours is a GE and have been good since 2020 (knock on wood). It's probably 60" wide and barely held the 1/2 cow we got during COVID.
PSA - I have a butcher store/meat market opening in the next month or two (thanks permit office) in western (Etowah) NC if anyone is in need of good beef. We can also do 1/4, 1/2 or whole cows. All cows are local, grass fed beef. Chances are if you had prime rated beef at a restaurant in the Asheville area it was the same cows.

True, but that's only a need if you're into cannibalism.

We always just feed the bodies to the hogs and avoid buying a whole other freezer. Of course, when you stop to think about it, I guess it's the transitive property of cannibalism, really.

a couple of bodies per week. So freezer meal prep really saves me some hassle. Only downside is I keep finding Watchtower pamphlets in my frozen okra.

At the moment, we don't have a freezer, decided to go with 2 fridges and sold the old upright freezer. Like most appliances, I prefer Whirlpool. The top freezers give us enough freezer spaces, barely, and we have to manage turning over the contents. This time of year we start making room for fresh veggies and fruit that we freeze.

got it off of Amazon, much better deal than local. I tried looking it up but has been great.
Also recommend a jobber or two before to help pay for it

I did pull a quiet jobber and have a sweet little 7cf deep freezer. Pulled it out of a vacant unit in my one of my properties! Lmao, this is to close for comfort!
Runs gooooood. Keeps the lsd sugar cubes in perfect for. Although I like a few drops to each eye
