David Treadwell Story

10

Sep 18, 2023, 4:03 PM

Known as “Mr. Clutch” at Clemson, Treadwell won or tied a game for the Tigers with a field goal on six different occasions. He was a consensus first team All-American kicker in 1987, connecting on 18 of 22 field goals. And he followed up with a successful six year pro career.

This story was told by Coach Ford about a decade ago at the Savannah QB Club:
Treadwell was recruited by Coach Ready to Clemson from Bolles in Jacksonville and backed up Igwebuike in 1984. In 1985 road opener at Va Tech, Ford called a timeout in 4th qtr with no time left, and called on Treadwell to kick the game winner. Ford asked the Clemson Special Teams coach how he felt about Treadwell's nerves, and coach replied "I don't know Coach. This is his 1st kick to win a game." Ford replied, "you mean in college?" Special Teams coach answered "No. David just played soccer in high school." As Ford puckered up and looked the other way, he heard the Clemson side cheer as Treadwell made the kick and Tigers won 20-17. Treadwell would make many more over the next 3 years. Somehow, Ford teams could really recruit kickers and punters, and they delivered.

BTW, Robbie Caldwell spoke at Savannah QB Club last week. The club really enjoyed his visit and stories.

David went to law school after he retired from football, and is now working in Colorado.

Hey SocMan2- There's one HUGE detail about that game- winning kick in VaTech that was left out of Ford's account- not sure if Ford forgot or if the author forgot. The initial attempt by Treadwell was no good and we radio listeners thought we had lost the game- but there was a penalty (I don't recall what the penalty was) and he made the second one. I happened to be a friend of his at that time fwiw.

Missing part of this story

I was a freshman at Clemson and was at that game with my Dad. We lived in Galax, VA (closeby). I went home for the weekend and my dad went up to Blacksburg with me. Treadwell’s first attempt was from 40 yards and Treadwell was short. Game over? But VT was offsides so the officials moved the ball 5 yards closer to the goal line. Treadwell’s 35 yarder was good.

I went home from that game sticky from all of the cups of Coke and whatever that were thrown at Clemson fans.
