USC v Tenn question

Oct 19, 2013, 6:04 PM

When Tenn had the ball on the chickens 4 yard line or so with 40 seconds to go...why not try to run in for a touchdown rather than wait and spike the ball only to kick it? Had they not been able to get in, they could have still kicked it...giving them two chances to try and score.

Was it fear of the running play lasting longer than it would have taken to get the kicking team out there to score to win?

Fear of fumble. Plain and simple.***

Yeah, I guess so.***

I think having no timeouts remaining played a major role

in the decision

40 seconds is a long time though

and they had been able to break out for a few 5-6 yard runs.

In the end, I guess it doesn't really matter.

I think it was to leave USuC no time to score. It looked like they were intentionally letting Tennessee to score so they could get the ball back and attempt to win with a quick drive and maybe a hail marry.

no time outs left

IIRC there were about 27 secs left

in any case, running the clock down meant the coots had no chance to get the ball back.

They haven't played USC

They did lose earlier this year to Oregon. Maybe that's what you were thinking about. I did enjoy them beating the C O C K S today though.
