remake on Netflix. Very, very well done. Heavy flick so not the best choice if you’re looking for a post-game pick-me-up, but an excellent, artfully made war movie.

waiting for an opportune time to watch it.

Was watching a series on AHC (American Heroes Channel) called "Apocalypse: World War I" last night. It's a 5 part documentary series that is very well done - highly recommended. The sheer mass insanity that infected Europe's monarchies during the WWI years that resulted in a sustained mass slaughter of humanity shows how bad things can get when nation state leaders become so utterly disconnected from the ordinary citizen. Anytime I read about WWI I always end up wanting to scream "what is wrong with these people?" - "these people" being the monarchs and their Generals. It boggles the mind to see how they continued to feed men into an industrialized death machine at such a scale for so long - to the point that only insane people would do what they did. I guess that is why WWI finally ended political control from most of Europe's monarchies.

As retired military guy it is also disconcerting to see how the military leadership in WWI was so utterly obtuse to the realities of their conflict. They had no idea how to fight an industrialized war. Guys like Field Marshal Douglas Haig killed some 200,000 Brits in frontal assaults at the Somme. Did the Brits fire Haig for his idiocy? No they kept him in charge so he could rack up another 200,000 plus allied casualties at Passchendaele. I guess that is why historian Norman Stone has claimed that "Haig was the greatest Scottish general ever, since he killed more Englishmen than any other."
