Yep. Thought Butler might get one more season, but not exactly shocked. Hires since Davis: *McKinney: Good at Rice, but couldn't duplicate WAC success. No winning seasons at Clemson. Last Clemson coach to defeat South Carolina (in Staley's first season). *Umoh: no HC experience, but she was a Lady Tiger. Clearly was not ready. No winning seasons at Clemson. *Smith: lost half her games at UAB. Got the feeling we said, "We can pay this much...who can we get?" No winning seasons at Clemson. *Butler: best hire in that stretch. Had been fired by Florida (her alma mater), and been out of basketball the year before we hired her. Still, I was pretty excited about the hire. Two winning seasons at Clemson. About to see how interested we are in developing this program.

Hopefully imari will stick. Not sure if ruby will transfer. I hope not. Thought she might get one more. But, I see where Cluse announced her transfer. She had one more year.
Sad but not really too big of a surprise.

Don't they know we're not a basketball school. We can't recruit basketball players to a rural location, players want an urban location. Our facilities suck. Our pep band doesn't play well. Students don't show up. We've never been good. She was resting the players for the ACC tournament. Who will we be able to hire? No one wants this job. The whole team will transfer, and all the recruits will go somewhere else. It's not her fault that the players missed free throws or went cold from 3-point range. Sometimes good teams just lose games, that's basketball.

They will probably jump off the Tiger ship and swim over to a ship with a proven still on staff captain!!! I would be OK with that bc there is always damage done with firing a coach that they committed to, I just hope that it isn't the coots boat they swim over to!!!

Her little boys were priceless and she loved Clemson. Sad she didn't get one more year considering the two injuries she had. But she brought in highly rated talent. Ott was supposed to be lights out rebounding and she hasn't developed through her junior year. It's taken a 5* ruby two years to just now start showing signs of development. I'm sure the coots having 72 rebounds and us scoring 38 points didn't help much.
Not sure why Amanda couldn't get a 6-4 transfer this past season and play Robinson as a power forward.

Recruiting well but development & wins didn't come along w/ it.
Hood has put out couple names to keep eye on: current Coastal HC Kevin Pedersen (hasn't looked good in 2 years at Coastal but had good bit of success @ D2 Lander prior) & Chattanooga HC Shawn Poppie (back to back SoCon titles, was assistant under Kenny Brooks at VA Tech, has upstate SC ties).
Personally I prefer a top assistant from 1 of the consistent Top 25/NCAAT programs that's shown recruiting chops (that kinda knows what Clemson is up against competing against ACC + SC). Whoever the hire is, hope they get the support & have the drive to get Clemson WBB off its @$$ & back on its feet.

They are never going to hire a male coach.
They got rid of Jim Davis, a very successful coach, because they wanted to hire a woman...

maybe Neff won't subscribe to that philosophy
Mar 12, 2024, 8:47 PM
|
|
He's already hired a male head coach for the women's tennis team (after firing the female coach.) Now basketball is a bit different of course because it usually gets more attention. But refusing to even consider any male coach just because of gender would seem to be an incredibly foolish decision. That would eliminate a whole bunch of options who might be great fits for the job, and for a team that's consistently been one of the worst in the ACC for 2 decades, they really can't afford to shoot themselves in the foot like that because their options are going to be pretty limited to begin with, at least in terms of high-quality candidates. Now personally, I don't care if Clemson's women's basketball coach is a man or a woman, I just want the best person for the job. I just think it would be very poor judgement to rule out all men just because of wanting to make a diversity statement. Thus far in his brief tenure, I think Neff has made good bold decisions and shown a strong commitment to winning. That's why I'm hopeful that he will not allow the women's basketball team to be hamstrung by a shortsighted diversity initiative, even if the administration was operating that way before.

Geez- with Butler, the recruiting is the hardest part of the job and she has done a good job. Unfortunately, she’s evidently not so good at the X’s & O’s or the motivation side of things.

Story updated now but Graham Neff's statement on the decision:
“I thank Amanda for her contributions to our basketball program as head coach for the past six seasons and wish her the best in the future,” said Neff. “We are committed to completing a national search for the next leader of the program as the sport continues to grow. We believe that we are resourced and supported in a way to make this one of the top teams in the nation every year.”

Really like her and how she runs the program and so wanted her to be successful. I for one was pleasantly surprised at her early success. But that job has lots of challenges.
She has certainly improved the state of the program better than it was when she arrived.
But most people had a good idea 6 years ago her likelihood of being very successful was very low. Just look at her career resume before she got there. Would be surprised if many people thought she would suddenly develop a coaching record that would be loaded with wins.

It was in her first year here.
Brad has been to three NCAA Tournaments here. This year will make four.
Also, Amanda had four losing seasons in her six years here. Brad has had one losing season in his 14 years here.

This is about the dumbest decision that has been made in a while. Amanda was a good ambassador for the women's program and was starting to get the recruits that she needed. The situation that she inherited was not good and has had not been good since Coach Davis left. I think the program started the year in good shape but the injury bug took out some of the new players. This just makes me sick to my stomach.

Was thinking Clemson had some thing really good going and it would continue after that first season of going to the NCAA Tournament.Hate that it had to happen like this for coach Butler. She could recruit no doubt I give her that, but when it came to the coaching part especially this season and the big leads that were blown in ACC games that was what was frustrating to see happen so much.I know there were injuries that happen, but she still players that could have and should have won and should been better.Wish her and children all the best and her Basketball future also. Now as far as the next head coach,I'm not against hiring a female like it might have appeared a month ago when I made the post about wanting to see a male coach as the next head coach of the women's program,I just feel like with all the male coaches out there today who are doing so well I think that could be Clemson having that kind of success also and Jim Davis proved that.Hopefully this hire coming up by Graham Neff will be a homerun hire,I have faith and think he will make a great hire, female or male.Wish Vic Schaefer at Texas would be an easy get but he would want to much money and probably would not want to have to rebuild a program from the ground up after being so successful at Mississippi State and now Texas.

Last 6 championships in this sport won by teams coached by women (Mulkey, Staley, VanDeveer, McGraw).
Not sure liking Jim Davis and him being a male should have anything to do with our coaching search in 2024. Hope Neff will look for the best available coach that fits Clemson.
Agree with you, wish Coach B and her family all the best. It didn’t work out but I don’t think that was from lack of effort and she’s leaving a program with talent (if they stay) and isn’t on the bottom of the bottom of the ACC like the one she inherited.

Whoever it may be as the next head coach,it has got to be the right hire this time around, enough is enough.4 head coaches in 19 seasons since coach Davis was let go,17 losing seasons and only 1 win against South Carolina(2009 94-92) in that span. Was 32-21 against South Carolina when Dawn Staley took over, now the record is 33-34

Well, I was kind of on the fence about Amanda. I had heard there was some uncertainty about her future, but I honestly thought she was safe for at least 1 more year. I certainly didn't expect something to happen this quickly, I'll admit I'm quite surprised at this. Hopefully Neff can continue his streak of good hires in finding a replacement. And I really hope Berry won't decommit because of this.

Thought she did a decent job compared to the past few coaches. She deserved at least 8 more years to really get a foothold on the program.
