Brownell / things I heard yesterday and last night
Mar 20, 2017, 9:45 AM
|
|
We heard yesterday that there was a big meeting of "the suits" and that a decision had been made regarding Brownell. At the time, I was told that a buyout had been negotiated, and that Brad was out the door. Then we all started hearing the rumors last night that Clemson was interested in Will Wade....
I was told that Wade used Clemson as leverage for another deal. That Wade has no interest in returning to Clemson, and views this job as a mid-major in a big conference with zero upside. He wants to follow in Shaka's footsteps and get a "big" job.
Once that was known, things changed in the proverbial landscape and Brad was retained.
Keep in mind, this isn't confirmed, but it's things I have heard from both sides. Seems to make sense.

It wouldn't make any difference if BB was only being paid $63.17 a week. If he accepted that to be the coach at Clemson, I expect him to give 110% at doing the very best coaching job that he can possibly do bc he accepted the job knowing what the job paid!!!

Amen. A savior Coach wwho I and many onTigernet believes wished would come back to Clemson just dumped on this program. He knows 100x more than anyone here. Perhaps this will wake Clemson fans up.

to be accountable for their decisions. There are likely 1,000 different stories on second and third hand conversations.
If Wade thinks his move is to an upper echelon team - whatever he considers as that - I can't necessarily blame him if he achieves it. VCU is a really good job and he might be able to reach a top 20'ish job from there. Or he could flame out before he gets that opportunity. I think the jury is still out on how good he is anyways.

in my opinion. So you decide to fire a coach, have 1 target, get played by that target and then quickly re-confirm that you're keeping said coach you decided to fire? To me - if that is the case - that's not managing your situation well. At all.
This all sounds like spin, albeit bad spin. Or sources who really don't know what they think they know.

this website now give TDP all of the credit for the success of the football program and want to run DRad out of town.
The contract extension that TDP gave Bowden was just as bad or worse than the one DRad offered Brownell. We fired TB mid-season a year and a half later and ultimately hired the interim coach, a move that rarely ever works out. In fact, this is probably about the only time in recent memory that it has worked out. Maybe TDP deserves some credit for seeing something in Dabo or maybe he just got lucky. Maybe he went all-in with a bad hand and just sucked out on the river. Either way, it worked out for him and for Clemson and now he suddenly gets all of the credit for our football success. That feels like revisionist history to me.

what makes people think we could go out and get a big name coach???? Coaches put players in a position to win. Which we were in every game but two. Players have to make plays!!! I think next year will be Brad's best team. The 4 recruits coming in, can play!! Plus you add in David Skara and I see us winning over 20 games next year.

Word on the street was that Spencer and Hudson could and would play. I'm not looking for freshmen to make much of an impact next year other than a few relief minutes. The only returners with any reasonably decent offensive skills are Mitchell, Reed and Thomas. The rest haven't shown an ability to be the "go to guys" in critical situations or as consistently performing players.

It makes sense David . Drad was in bad situation. He had a bad coach that needed to be fired but looking at a coach using us as a stepping stone. Im disappointed in Wade because we gave him his start. Ethics in basketball or recruiting? No way! David how many years extension did Drad give Brownell? Does he have conditions that he must meet on the court to save his job next year?

Brownell may not admit it but I'm sure he and Drad are looking over what people are saying. Drad was not willing to pay Wade what he wanted so he was forced to keep Brownell. That's not an endorsement for Brownell. The leash will be short on him.

My fear is that what Wade said about the Clemson program is what most coaches feel/view the program. the two coaches that most on here look as successes are Rick Barnes who had 1 good recruiting class and OP who, when he left in the middle of the night had run out of quality recruits.
In the HISTORY of the ACC no coach has won more than 59 conference games in their Clemson career. Cliff Ellis was one, and when Brad Brownell wins a conference game next year, he will become the all time leader with 60.
This is the historical state of Clemson Basketball.

any other former Clemson assistant. We need to completely cut ties with the past. Now, the really disturbing part of what you reported is how it all went down. That sounds like a complete low-rent way to handle the second largest sport at a huge sports school. That mismanagement would have to fall on "the suits", as you put it. If they couldn't put more into it than what you described, maybe we need some "new suits". As far as I'm concerned the only people in that athletic department that we can not live without are Dabo and his staff and Turnipseed, the soccer coach and staff, and Monte Lee. I included Lee because the team looks good, his recruiting is good and he brought home a conference championship in year one, not to mention won the coot series both of his first two years.
Anybody else over there is completely dispensable, especially the suits.

1) sad to see guy w/ ties to Clemson feel that way about the job. Think we can consider that bridge officially burnt.
2) D Rad & the suits should've had more than one choice. The 'Wade or nothing' thing seems like a cop out. Poorly played on his part.
3) interesting to see how Brownell responds to the knowledge he was on the way out & retained only b/c the other option was a flake. Hope it'll light a fire to get things turned around next season, but could easily just make him phone it in.
This whole situation was a combination of poor administration decisions and the perception of our program. Yes, we have alot of poor history regarding basketball. But to say there's no upside to the job here is ridiculous. Our biggest thing for when we do move on & get a new coach will be getting a coach that'll be basketball's version of Dabo - someone that will believe that you can win @ Clemson, get people to buy in, & most importantly, have the support of the administration. There's no reason that we shouldn't have success on the hardwood. It's time for all parties involved to quit coming up with excuses & start focusing on the task at hand.

if it was only a matter of the coach's attitude, every program would be great at basketball.
the issue for CLemson is there are a ton of competitive basketball programs to include private schools and non p5 schools, and Clemson has no advantage over any school for obtaining good recruits.
