This is what happens to your place as the world's #1 economic super power when you sell out your workforce for cheap labor.

Life wasn't all about buying cheap crap here in the US until the 90's. NAFTA did exactly what Ross Perot said, sending manufacturing job after manufacturing job in rural America south of the border. The normalization of trade relations with China only exacerbated the issue, sending more manufacturing there. So jobs that previously could support a family reasonably comfortably just dissolved and we became flooded with cheap merchandise because all people could afford was cheap merchandise. And the wealth gap increased because those who could afford to source the goods from overseas and south of the border and resell them made the money that the increasingly poorer people were spending for consumer goods.
If you really want to get in the weeds you can get into the wage depression for rural jobs caused by the influx of illegal immigration that filled jobs cheaply that ordinarily these folks could have done for higher wages absent the option of the cheap illegal labor.
You should know this already. Just drive down Hwy 5 between Rock Hill and Blacksburg and count the number of empty plants and warehouses that were busy and provided decent jobs just 30 years ago. You're saying people want only want cheap stuff because they became poor and I'm telling you that they became poor precisely because cheap stuff became available.

There are literally whole ghost towns throughout the south now because of how NAFTA destroyed the textile industry.

If you had a job interview that was absolutely critical to you and you knew there was one other applicant in the running, and the hiring manager called you and said "whoever gets here first gets the job", you're likely going to break several traffic laws in the process of getting there as quick as you can, even though you know it's illegal. The risk is minimal and the reward is substantial.
That's how illegal immigration enforcement went....it was a wink and a nod from both parties charged with enforcing the laws for decades. So if you owned a business, and you knew you could pay less and remain competitive with your competition who you knew were utilizing illegal labor, risking almost zero consequences in the process, or take the moral high ground and only source legal labor, paying more and risking going out of business, you'd likely take the first option all day long.
I blame the lax enforcement of the law far more than those who availed themselves of the opportunities created by the lax enforcement.

know what way they should be pulling the rope. They vote as if giving more tax breaks to the ultra rich will ever help anybody but said ultra rich. Folks aren't going to suddenly jump to those income levels. Many are so #### leveraged that they can't take much of a bump in the road. Yet help the wrong folks they do.
