Worst band you've seen vs. expectations, and best surprise?

Apr 29, 2014, 2:03 PM

Worst: Everclear, at some festival-type tour in the 90's (obvi)...I wasn't really a fan, but they were pretty huge at the time & headlining that tour. HORRIBLEx10

Best: Without scouring my brain, I'd probably say The Smashing Pumpkins, also mid-90's. I wasn't a big fan at all, but friend got 4 tix for his birthday and I went along.
Was thoroughly impressed in every aspect of that show.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Best vs expectations was probably

Apr 29, 2014, 2:07 PM

Cowboy Mouth. I still only know one of their songs, but their show is full of energy and pretty awesome.

I don't think I've been to a show where I went in with high expectations and left disappointed.

I also saw Everclear in some mid 90s wave-fest type show,

Apr 29, 2014, 2:09 PM

and they were effing awful. I had liked them prior to that. At that same festival was Big Head Todd and the Monsters. They were effing awesome. I was high.

Bare Naked Ladies, before the fat guy quit, surprised me. I went 'cause the wife told me to, but I was entertained.

Best Surprise has to be either HomeGrown or No Doubt. Wasn't a big fan of either going in and left a fan.

Worst band - probably either Atreyu or Fall out Boy.

Re: Worst band you've seen vs. expectations, and best surprise?

Apr 29, 2014, 2:16 PM

Worst: Henry Rollins, I had no idea who he was. It was late 84 or early 85, my senior year in HS. I had heard of black flag but wasnt my cup of tea. Buddy wanted me to go to Columbia to Rockafellas to see this guy sing. Called him a "poet." I WAS SCARED FOR MY LIFE! I have no idea what he sang, I have never before or since heard any of those songs. He came out in a pair of jogging shorts, no shoes, no shirt with all those tattoos. Dude compound fractured his leg diving off stage yadda yadda yadda.

Best: Chicago. I considered this a "chick flick" of concerts. Ex girlfriend who was trying to get back together asked me to go. Also spring of 85. I hadnt been a Chicago fan and still am not, but those guys impressed me. They were pretty dang good.

Other concerts were both better and worse, but i usually got what i expected. Saw David Lee Roth, I figured he would suck.....did not disappoint when he didnt know the words to Van Halen songs.

Saw Black Flag at the Milestone in Charlotte and the Rollins

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

easily the most surprisingly best - Meat Loaf

Apr 29, 2014, 2:16 PM

went sort of against my will but was blown away. Awesome voice, tireless energy - 100% effort. He rocked the house. Whale (pun intended) of a show.

runner-up: Skid Row at Rockefellas in Columbia SC. Had never even heard of them before, their first album had just come out. I bought it that night. What a rock show. They became headliners less than a year later.

Worst - Bob Dylan. Godawful. Couldn't make out a word. Boredom. This was around 2002 or so, maybe he was just too old.

runner-up:
Saw one of Hank Jr's drunk shows. He was wasted beyond entertaining- forgetting words, line, chords, etc. Was still kind of funny though. Have seen him at his peak though and he didn't win "Entertainer of the Year" for 12 straight years (or how ever many) without reason. Just caught him on a terrible night that time.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Best was RATM at Lollapalooza in '93, because NOBODY

Apr 29, 2014, 2:18 PM

outside of LA had heard of them. They were the first band on at noon, with maybe a quarter of the crowd thru the gates. They stole the show from Tool, AIC, and Primus, who are on the '90s Mt. Rushmore. It was a "WOW, WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST SEE?" kind of thing.

best surprise - Jimmy Buffet

Apr 29, 2014, 2:19 PM

I like his music a lot more now after seeing him in person and that was with all of the sloppy drunks

Worst was U2 at Clemson. They played a bunch of shatty songs pumping up that Europa tour. Rage should have been the headliner that night. They rocked.

Buffett pre-"Volcano" (1979) is top shelf music

Apr 29, 2014, 2:27 PM

anything 1980+ is the suck. This is clearly defined.

A1A (1974) may be the finest album ever made for listening to near a body of water.

Side A

"Making Music for Money" (Alex Harvey) 4:01
"Door Number Three" (Jimmy Buffett, Steve Goodman) 3:03
"Dallas" (Roger Bartlett) 3:25
"Presents to Send You" (Jimmy Buffett) 2:40
"Stories We Could Tell" (John B. Sebastian) 3:18
"Life Is Just a Tire Swing" (Jimmy Buffett) 3:04

Side B
"A Pirate Looks at Forty" (Jimmy Buffett) 3:57
"Migration" (Jimmy Buffett) 4:13
"Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season" (Jimmy Buffett) 4:21
"Nautical Wheelers" (Jimmy Buffett) 3:35

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the cheesy stuff started in 1979 with "Fins"

Apr 29, 2014, 2:35 PM

as I said earlier, his career is clearly defined. His early stuff is old-school country. He dove into the reggae, calypso and "party" stuff and the substance went away.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Buffett came to Carowinds nearly every year and it was

Apr 29, 2014, 2:35 PM [ in reply to Buffett pre-"Volcano" (1979) is top shelf music ]

always a party and a good show. His run of albums from 73-78 was fantastic.

73: A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean

74: Living & Dying in 3/4 Time

74: A1A

76: Havana Daydreamin'

76: High Cumberland Jubilee

77: Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes

78: Son of a Son of a Sailor

Volcano in 1979 was OK, but did not begin to approach the songwriting that came before it, and was clearly an attempt to go commercial and make money as opposed to making art.

Apr 29, 2014, 2:50 PM

They had sobered up, but hadn't totally gone commercial. Took Joonyer to see the Just Push Play tour in 2001, and it was a good high energy show but far too little of their great hard rock fare for me. In his day, Steven Tyler's voice was an amazing instrument.

Earth, Wind and Fire - Sept. 21, 1981

Apr 29, 2014, 3:10 PM

Old Charlotte Coliseum. Killer. PERIOD.

Do you remember the 21st night of September?
Love was changing the mind of pretenders
While chasing the clouds away

Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing
As we danced in the night
Remember, how the stars stole the night away, yeah yeah yeah

Hey hey hey
Ba de ya, say do you remember
Ba de ya, dancing in September
Ba de ya, never was a cloudy day

Ba duda, ba duda, ba duda, badu
Ba duda, badu, ba duda, badu
Ba duda, badu, ba duda

My thoughts are with you
Holding hands with your heart to see you
Only blue talk and love
Remember, how we knew love was here to stay

Now December found the love that we shared in September
Only blue talk and love
Remember, the true love we share today

Hey hey hey
Ba de ya, say do you remember
Ba de ya, dancing in September
Ba de ya, never was a cloudy day

There was a
Ba de ya, say do you remember
Ba de ya, dancing in September
Ba de ya, golden dreams were shiny days

The bell was ringing, aha
Our souls were singing
Do you remember every cloudy day, yau

There was a
Ba de ya, say do you remember
Ba de ya, dancing in September
Ba de ya, never was a cloudy day

There was a
Ba de ya, say do you remember
Ba de ya, dancing in September
Ba de ya, golden dreams were shiny days

Apr 29, 2014, 3:22 PM

yep. Went w/ the parents...I might've been 13?

Always liked (old) Billy Joel, but didn't care much for Elton John. However the chicks sitting behind us like both enough to dance the entire time - when I was seated and 'looking around', they were dancing such that their arms (and therfore shirts) were raised and everything contained within was visible to anyone sitting directly below them.

Zac Brown Band with String Cheese Incident at Interlocken Music Festival last year....they were tearing it up. Plus we had some fire favors so it was absolutely mind blowing. I've relistened to that set multiple times and it never gets old.

Link:
http://www.panicstream.net/vault/string-cheese-incident-09052013-arrington-va/

Biggest disappointment was last weekend in Nashville. Went to see Slightly Stoopid--turns out they're much better on my stereo while I'm sitting on my porch. I'll give them another chance at a real venue, in a town not full of Vandy dooshes and fake hippies (they play the Tabernacle in August)

Plus (flame on) Nashville sucks. Been there three times, never go back....well maybe for a Panic show ;)

Been to a pretty good amount of shows/festivals/whatever. I still travel cross country to see Panic play. The people, the venues, and of course the music is really hard to beat IMO....gonna suck when they hang it up

David Lee Roth was so drunk by the 3rd song that he couldn't hardly walk or sing for the rest of the night. Was so excited to go but so disappointed with the performance.

Best/Surprise: Before you ask, NO I do NOT have the ghey. Huey Lewis and the News, 1985 or 1986 I think. He sounded just as good live as he did on the radio or on tape. Did 3 encores and one of them he came out by himself and played the harmonica for about 10 minutes. Place went crazy.
