Williams Fumble

Sep 4, 2016, 4:21 PM

Can the defender legally make a play on the ball when he is out of bounds ?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope. Should not have been a fumble***

He's not the one who hit the ball. He swung and missed. The other guy hit it.

nope, you need to go back and watch that again. he stripped

Sep 4, 2016, 4:47 PM

it from the back side, the swipe did miss but hes the one who stripped it from the back too. all while out. the only thing i can think is there was another player on mike's back with a hand on mike's upper arm which technically can't be ruled out as a cause and effect of a fumble. But the strip was cause by the guy out of bounds. So technically when three dudes are tackling you legally and the dude out of bounds is the guys who got is hand on teh ball and stripped it thne youcan't technically say they had nothing to do with him fumbling eventhough they didn't actually do it.

does it matter that he may not have touched the ball?

Sep 4, 2016, 4:49 PM [ in reply to Re: Nope. Should not have been a fumble*** ]

He was clearly out of bounds and come back in bounds and was part of the tackling crew that hit and caused the fumble. Surely that would not a penalty? Or am I wrong?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It sure looked like the out of bounds man hit it! NO FUMBLE!***

Show me the rule.

I, like you, was certain it was illegal for an out of bounds defender to tackle or strip the ball. I can find no such rule, however. If you can find it I sure would like to see it.

its logical that if you are out of bounds and touch the ball

Sep 4, 2016, 5:35 PM

the play is dead, so clearly this is probably not the case

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly - it makes too much sense. But I'll be danged if I

Sep 4, 2016, 5:38 PM

can find any such rule.

A ball not in player possession is out of bounds if it is touching anything that is out of bounds.

Don't see anything there that addresses this situation.***

maybe

Sep 4, 2016, 5:57 PM

A ball in player possession is out of bounds if the ball or the player touches anything that is out of bounds other than a game official or another player.

seems the official or other player part mean it was a fumble

Correct***
