OMG, I spent plenty of time in her office back in the day. Back then she was Almeda Rogers Boettner. So glad to see that she has not mellowed with age. UGH! She was dead set opposed to any form of fun.

have gone on the field. But now that ESPN has made it one of their missions to end this tradition it has become some great safety hazard.
Heck, for many in the lower rows, it is actually the quickest way out of the stadium instead of everyone exiting through those portals.

Ever since the SEC instituted its field-rush ban
Oct 14, 2016, 6:34 PM

. . . fans on the field has become a big no-no among the scolds of college football. It is an unfortunate reality that in the college-football media universe, everything revolves around the SEC. Just look at the way Twitter lights up in indignation after every big game at Death Valley these days - "Bush league", "disgraceful", "embarrassing" & "trashy" are just a few of the epithets that get tossed about. I may be mistaken, but I think Clemson is the only Power 5 school that still allows something like this. The SEC & Pac-12 impose fines on schools that fail to prevent fans from going on the field. For sure, we've been doing this for decades, but with the rising profile of our school & football program, it's getting more scrutiny & negative press than it ever did before. At this point, all it will take is 1 more incident (a serious injury or some drunk fans verbally or physically assaulting an opposing team's players or coaches) for it to be banned entirely, either by the CU administration or by the ACC.

Easily solved. Have our fans meet in east end zone not at mid field so players can exit the field.

So let me get this straight. We now have thirty extra second to rush to three entry points. In the hill area to be able to trample those at the front of the line. Makes sence to me. Why not put steps at the end of each isle and wait the 25 seconds( a great idea)? This is a great tradition at Clemson. Please, please don't let us lose it.

I remember the year they tore down the goalposts after the USC game, broke the leg of one of the students that climbed it and injured one of the cops that was trying to secure the area. Next season we had the collapsable posts. It makes since, but might be the first step down a slippery slope to just getting rid of it. probably would be easier/less wall hopping if they added a few entry points, particularly on the home side, though I suppose they are also worried about the security of all the items in the team/bench area that might be of value to someone with sticky fingers. hopefully this is not a tradition i see disappear in my lifetime. Love taking my son onto the field after games.

Entry points from the stands is an excellent idea, and hopefully something they do to help preserve the tradition.

I agree with this move. I have seen the crowd, from both sides of the t.v. screen.
They look ridiculous on t.v. pushing everybody. If they some of them just had a bit of common sense and respect.

I was at that game where they tore the goal post down. I also remember helping hauling it through the streets before ultimately tossing the goal post into the big water fountain in front of the library. It was great!! That's mostly what I remember that night. I also remember the avalanche of bodies that where flying down the hill after the game. Bodies were trampled, people were smothered, it was utter chaos.

Depends on how old you now are and your life expectancy. I believe we just got notified that elimination of the tradition of fans gathering on the field at Clemson is soon to be a thing of the past, all done in the name of safety, fairness and diversity, I'm sure (not).

Glad to get the TD from the idiot who, obviously, isn't capable of an intelligent dialog. Please take me off your list of people who read my posts, or to clarify in case you have trouble with comprehension, please ignore me in the future. You have nothing I want to share anything with, and if you will let me know who your are, I will ignore you, too. Oh, and by the way, how did the new rules work out for you on Saturday?

we tore down the goal post that the collapsible ones were installed for the 2004 season. I was at both games and I stayed out of the frenzy of people tearing down the posts at the USC game in 2002. It was sight to see from the stands, one I'll never forget. I joined the crowd on the field for the FSU game in 2003. That was a very intense moment, when you're on the field in the kind of crowd. Also something I'll never forget.
I do believe they've been indicating in previous games that there is a 30 sec window after the game before fans are allowed to enter the field from the gates at the east endzone. This isn't new. I hope the tradition remains but I also hope people are responsible and don't trample others trying to get a high five from a 19 year old

Geez, what's this got to do with political ideology?
Oct 14, 2016, 5:06 PM
|
|
I'm against nanny-state micromanagement of peoples' personal decisions whether it's imposed by the left or by the right. Whatever, I thought is was conservatives who were for strict law & order.
Don't get me wrong - I'm all for keeping this tradition alive. It's been going on for decades with only a few rare incidents. But with the rising national profile of our football program & university, it's important to understand that we are getting more national scrutiny over this than ever before. The pressure to end this is mounting, & it will take only one more serious injury, incident or complaint from another school before Clemson is forced to end it for good.

The universe is "ruled" by "law and order". Whether we believe that is irrelevant. If one's attitude is to not be ruled over...then that attitude alone is a form of lawlessness,
Try defying the "law of Gravity". Was this law created by conservatists? It does not matter if you Agree with gravity or not. At some point you will obey it and hit the ground......silly post!

Please! Just like our prayers over the PA system prior to our games are taboo, as well (last time i checked, which was Saturday in my seats), but we still had a good prayer over the stadium PA system. It is high time some of us took on the challenge without fear of consequences from a small group who never fought for anything in their lives.

It's a shame that the ones who are on the field giving their all for 60 minutes can't talk to their friends on the opposing team and chat before people surround them. When the players and coaches say something about it, it's a problem

Hopefully the fans will respect Clemson University as well as the players & coaches enough to follow these safety measures. I think it is great that Clemson allows fans on the field but I do feel that it looks disrespectful to visiting teams when some fans rush the field too quickly after the game. Be safe, appreciate the opportunity and GO TIGERS!

stadium bans in addition to fines for being selfish imbeciles.
Be respectful. It is and always has been a gathering at the paw. That's important to keep considering the SEC outright bans it in addition to other schools who trade off on the liability.
It always bugged me when announcers would talk about us "rushing" the field after a win, when it's something we've been doing forever win or lose. If we abuse it we're going to lose a wonderful element of Clemson football. Why the hurry?

Actually I remember and I know its on film CJ Spiller wanted to shake Bobby Bowden's hand some years ago and as CJ moved towards him one of our screaming fan ran right between them, oblivious to the moment and his rudeness, and it looked like CJ had disgust on his face as he backed off.

I think it has been well thought out. 30 seconds is time enough for coaches and players to shake hands and some to get to the interview area before the crowd rushes the field. limiting the access points allows the equipment and the opposing team to leave the field if they want to.

No one wants to really rush the field for a nc state win. It will happen but not in mass as it would when we have big wins, against the Louisville's and FSU's of the world.
If you're hoping fans aren't going to rush the field after a win like Louisville, you're crazy.

They do not have to lock up 20000 people they only have to lock up the few that come over the walls, and they it will stop. They then only have to control the access points.

Ok so i don't think rushing the field against a team we just blew out really comes into this "dispute of opinions. " *But* of we win say an epic game (ie on the level of Notre Dame or Louisville this year) they'll have to taze me. Then 80+ thousand will pass over me.

Also I also would lay down my field rushing aggression, if and only if the god forsaken woo hoo is abolished. So athletic department do we have a treaty so to speak?

I truly believe this could work as planned if they would

change it from 30 seconds to 25 seconds for the wait. It would thus mirror the "most exciting 25 seconds" of the hill entrance, but after the game for the fans to enter the field instead. Seems like a traditional hook that could more likely help people honor the "pause" and make it work.
It kinda stinks when the coaches can't meet up squarely afterwards and players gibe. They'll find something that works but it's a good idea to have some parameters for sportsmanship and safety reasons.

from the wall. Do you honestly think people will wait in line at a minuscule few locations to get out there?!? If I break my ankle, it's on ME!!!
BTW, I like the 25sec idea you've got there. Get the crowd to countdown. One last roar for the players to hear from tigernation!

Although most fans are not those who cause any problem, there will be those few who do.
The goal posts were an easy example. They kept tearing them down and so they had to install the collapsible posts. If that didn't happen, who know, Mike Williams might not have been injured and Clemson would have won a national title and Watson would have won his Heisman Trophy. It's a butterfly effect.
This security measure is a good thing. We don't want to wait until another bad thing to happen first before doing something.

goalposts, not rushing the field, which is a fair assertion. Mike Williams likely does not break his neck in Game One last year had we not had to install collapsible goalposts with their squared bases due to fans ignoring requests not to tear them down, which at Clemson is even more dangerous due to the fact that we allow so many fans onto the field after games.
Goalposts being torn out and falling into said crowd on the field, however, is part of what led to the adjustment. So in a way, yes - allowing fans on the field actually inadvertently contributed to Mike Williams hitting a hard squared off goalpost and causing a break whereas a rounded traditional goalpost would have just jarred him. And if he had played all year it's plausible that DW4 wins the Heisman and we win the Natty.
So yes, fans on the field after games may very well have ultimately cost DW4 the Heisman and Clemson a national championship last year. Crazy stuff.

Why do they need a collapsable goal post. There is very little for them to celebrate other than the game finally being over and the beat down to cease.

I hate someone got injured but we have been doing this for a long time and nobody has been killed. Let's not dumb down this tradition of rushing the field. I did it when I was 12 and I let my kids do it when they were 12 and we all survived.

Only 3 injuries when 18,000 fans come crushing together in a happy hodge podge ? I'd say that is a win . I hosestly would have thought the injury number would have been at least in the double figures range .

While most of the gatherings at the paw are pretty mild and safe, they quickly become full-fledged field rushes for games like Louisville.
There IS a middle ground here where we can preserve a tradition while also making it safer and more organized.

. . . toward ending the practice entirely.
I don't have any inside information, but I take it from the press release that it was done partially in response to outside pressure - whether from opposing teams' coaches & officials or from ESPN. Yes, all of us Clemson Tiger fans know that we've been doing it this way for decades & that for the most part it's never been a problem. But . . .
Ever since the SEC instituted its "no field rush" rule (in 2001 or 2002 I think) & began fining schools for allowing it to happen, "field rushing" has gradually come to be regarded a big no-no among the football scolds. And we all know that in college football media universe, everything revolves around the SEC. We know we're not actually "rushing" the field at all, but that's not the way it looks at a glance on TV. If anyone should have any doubts about this perception, just look at the way Twitter lights up in indignation every time we have a big, nationally televised game in Death Valley: "Bush league", "disgraceful", "embarrassment" & "trashy" are just a few of the epithets that get tossed about. To my knowledge, Clemson is the only school among the Power 5 conferences that still opens the field to the fans after the game. One has to suspect that the "powers that be" in college football have been pressuring Clemson to end this tradition. One also has to suspect that Clemson administrators have come to believe that it makes us look bad on TV & that they would gladly end the practice if it weren't for the insistence of us fans. And so perhaps they have settled on a pretext & a gradualist approach toward ending it.
Two things we can do. First, speak out. Second, let's maintain the tradition in big numbers tomorrow & from here on out, while taking special care to do it in an orderly & respectful way.

Sadly it isn't so much the tradition is dangerous it's that people are now dangerous. I grew up in a world where we had our hunting rifle in the window of our truck at school. No one ever even dreamed of using that in a fight let along mass murder of other students. Times have changed. Games in the 90's when I first started going it wasn't as much of a push as it was everyone being patient and entering the field. Late games, drunk students and fans and peoples overall disrespect is solely responsible for this. Not to mention Clemson suddenly has a "new" fan base due to our recent successes and these people know nothing of our valued traditions rooted in honor and respect. Just look at the trash everywhere after a game. #### anyone who throws trash down like I have seen lately
