Our facility is top on the line. We spend a lot of money on that facility on Lake Hartwell there.

Just kidding of course ... but honestly, what DO recreational boaters do when that fairly narrow portion of Hartwell is commandeered for a rowing competition??

Coach Howard's Curse
Oct 29, 2015, 2:24 PM

While serving as head football coach and athletic director, Coach Frank Howard was approached by a group of students that wanted to start a rowing team. His response was: "I"ll not call it sport when you sit on your a$$ to see how fast you can go backwards."

I think you're T-Net's guru on all things Clemson Tennis, Rowing, Intramural Badminton, and Illegal Underwater Synchronized Break Dancing.

turnover we've gone through has a lot to do with it. Plus, we're still a SOMEWHAT new program. But Clemson does have a lot going for it with that sport, between the facilities, the school in general, the convenient lake. We also compete in the conference that, I think, has the most D1 level women's rowing programs.

The same reason we aren't winning national titles in lacrosse, ice hockey, and other sports that people from the South haven't traditionally played. We are starting to see more of all of those down here, but they don't tend to be people's first love.
To be a great rower, a very specific body type is needed and there aren't a ton of girls out there that fit that.
Clemson is starting to recruit better, but for a long time, they were trying to get girls from volleyball and basketball camps to come try the sport out. Clemson would field squads that had minimal experience against UVA and similar squads that were full of girls that had been doing it their whole lives. I feel that Clemson has overachieved and really done pretty well considering the years of catch up that they have to do.
Facilities, location, etc. can go a long way, but talent probably goes a little further, and Clemson has just had to play catch up with a program that isn't even 20 years old yet.
The only reason I have any exposure to rowing is because my wife was part of the inaugural team in 1998. She had never rowed before and didn't really have any idea what that sport was, but decided to give it a try. She didn't play any sports in high school, but fit the profile they were looking for. She ended up being okay though... She was three-time All-ACC, two time All-American, 50th Anniversary All-ACC team and earned a ton of other awards in her time as a rower. Later on, she was inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame. She is an example of what you can be if you work hard, but her story isnt typical. And when you field a team of girls with her level of experience against a squad of girls that are fighting for Team USA spots, it can be a little tough.

an inkling of interest in rowing should read the book "Boys in the Boat". The schools that are good are traditionally those that have had the rowing program for years....mostly those snooty type Ivy League schools...at least for the men's programs. I love the rowing team and follow them with great interest. Hopefully we can build a winning tradition here.....impressed so far. Congrats to JohnnyBighead's wife!

Convinced this is LBBs angry troll username, and things aren't looking so hot in columbia right now.
Thus the lack of the deceptively kind-hearted lbb troll posts lately, and a flooding of his alter-troll persona.
