Thoughts on spring game?

1

Apr 17, 2023, 5:17 PM

Went back and watched the spring game play by play and here are my thoughts. Would love to hear someone else’s insight as well:
1. Either Peter woods is as good as they say he is or our interior lineman aren’t that good. Cade never had time to step up in the pocket bc a center or Guard was in his lap every play whenever he went through his rewards. Our 1st team run game wasn’t as dominating either bc Sewell got beat on every single snap where he had to take an inside step.
2. Our receiving core isn’t good and there’s no excuse for it. With lack pass pro and lack of receivers getting separation, I foresee us running for majority of this season and getting really predictable. If a team can stop the run against us from a two high shell we’re in trouble.
3. Defensively I think this team will be dominate. Still don’t see a dominate pass rush which is where I hope XT steps up bc we’re gonna need that on third down bc I don’t see a lot of development from the secondary. May be wrong and hope I am but with the lack of skill on offensive side of the ball in space it’s tough to evaluate.

DVR'd from the previous week and watched out of force of habit

I can't get too exited about what happens in a glorified practice against your team mates whom you don't want to see injured. The full pads, more contact dills in the fall, closer to game day will tell the coaches more. The first game or three, we will have a pretty good idea of what we have. The rubber meets the road when being on the field means going all out to win a natty. Not playing touch FB with your BFFs. Too many players who will be starting against Duke were not on the field playing touch FB Sat.

I thought it went about as expected.

Spring game does very little to show the team we will see in the fall. Kickers looked solid bout the only true measure against reality.

We run a lot of RPO - can’t do that with qB no contact. As a result everything is affected.

I have not watched and don't even know how. The Masters was not on Saturday. There is zero reason to jump on the receivers because we were 5 short and players played in the glorified scrimmage who will not play a single play this year.

Why is this not surprising?***

We all know Sewell (who has potential) … will not actually start in the fall.
Our starting center (Will Putnam) … did not play.
Our best RB (Will Shipley) … did not play.
Two WRs (Beaux Collins & Adam Randall) who will start in the fall … did not play.
Our QBs running ability (as always) was limited by the rules of the scrimmage.

The things we saw or did not see in the Spring Game will not have a major bearing on how we play in the opener against Duke.

The cope for you guys still insisting Shipley is the best, when Mafah is clearly better and was announced the starter BEFORE they decided to keep Shipley out, is wild.

Re: Thoughts on spring game?

What have you got against Shipley? Mafah may be the better true RB when it's all said and done but Shipley has done much more with his opportunities than Mafah. Mafah is stronger but doesn't have the burst Shipley does. Shipley is also faster than Mafah. Shipley is more versatile than and may be closer to his ceiling than Mafah but Mafah seems to be just scratching the surface of what he can be. Let things develop instead of lobbying for Dabo to remove Ship out of Phil's way.

Re: Thoughts on spring game?

I love Shipley. I've compared him to Percy Harvin. He should be on the field a ton, whether in the slot, in a two back set, or any other way. But he's not the best RUNNING BACK on the team. That's a very specific role, and in that one, Mafah is better. Shipley is a bit faster and more explosive, but he's not ETN. ETN pretty much always broke the first tackle so could get yards even when our offensive line might be outmatched (think the big Ohio State game in 2020). Shipley is not good at yards after contact, getting brought down. Mafah is better at that, and for our team, that's more valuable in the running backs situation.

And I'm not lobbying. I'm critiquing all of those people saying Shipley is better and insisting he's our starter, when Dabo announced Mafah as playing with the starter team when Shipley was still healthy, and he confirmed on Saturday that these were the starters outside of the serious injuries.

You obviously have no clue what you’re talking about if you say Shipley is not good at YAC. You must not watch much Clemson football.

For those who think the spring game doesn’t have much significance I want you to go watch last years spring game and tell me the product you saw last April wasn’t the same product we got Sept-Nov. I get significant amount of starters didn’t play but football is football. The only player that didn’t play that our offense heavily relies on is Shipley. If we’re hanging our offense hat on a couple of players coming off of injury and some freshman then we have a big issue.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So being w/out starting center Will Putnam didn’t matter?

2

Apr 17, 2023, 8:53 PM

How about starting guards Walker Parks and Marcus Tate? Are we not relying heavily on those three? Of course we are.

Spring Games are a spectacle for the fans, not the team or the coaches. They are not even as valuable as a regular inter-squad scrimmage. They are basically a wasted practice session.

I’ve seen enough of them to judge.

By 1983, I had already seen over 25 Clemson Spring Games. I’ve seen another 40 since then. They’re always the same. A largely useless bit of pageantry designed to help the fans get through the off season.

The Spring Game is never encouraging. The play never lives up to,expectations. In short, the Spring Game does not matter.

We may indeed not produce at a high level on the field this coming fall, but very little of what happened this past Saturday will figure in to it.

Bro, that's a lame take.***

Not much excitement from watching the game...to many players out and Cade's throwing motion looks off.

O line will be OK. No doubt the receivers are a issue as they have been for 2 seasons. No separation and no deep threat.
Hopefully they go to the portal or pray the guys coming this summer can help.
Defense will be just fine.

As others have stated, spring games rarely show much in terms of where the team really is. I don't pay much attention until we get everyone in the fold, injury free, and on the field in the fall. After the Duke game, we will get an early indication of our potential and what we could become.

Our first national championship season was built on a predictable run game and dominant defense. I would take that again -- but we barely even saw a rough draft of our passing and receiving on Sat.

Re: Thoughts on spring game?

Apr 18, 2023, 3:20 AM

The most encouraging thing for me is Cade appears quicker than last season. He looked quicker an faster than any RB to me. He may be extremely dangerous running the ball. That should help the passing game.

Two hand touch on the QB

Apr 18, 2023, 9:33 AM

I always thought that we should have two hand touch on the QB instead of the 3 ft away whiff on the QB being a sack.

Although, I think there were a few "sacks" on Sat that the QB would have been laid out if it was live. But the RPO doesn't work well in the Spring Game.

Your comment brought back a memory from years ago. The coaches declared that they had to stop practice during a scrimmage because nobody could block Ricky Sapp. We immediately thought Sapp must be the second coming of Lawrence Taylor. Little did we know that our offensive line that year could not block my grandmother and she had a bad knee. Like then, we will soon see.

I thought Harris Sewell held up pretty well against Peter Woods. I was encouraged by what I saw out of him. He'll be a really good IOL one day. He might even be ready to help us this year. This will be a big summer for him. He needs to excel in the weight room.
