Why I don’t like the transfer portal

Kids can leave at anytime they want with no ramifications on their end! Yet in coaching a ball team you need to have stability and structure. Even professional managers and coaches demand that and need that to put together a solid team to build around. A foundation. This year we see so many players who didn’t like where they were on a depth chart so they are bolting thinking the grass is greener on the other side but in reality it’s green where you water and put the work in. Dabo has made comments around this many times. Ruke is a prime example. Stayed the course. Now onto the real reason this frustrates me as a fan. Dabo doesn’t care to use the portal like most teams do. Go look at almost every team inside the top 15 and everyone of those teams has transfers impacting their program in some way. If we are going to keep up with the changes then we must also play the game in my opinion. Doesn’t have to be often, but man I’m sure there are tons of guys willing to play for Clemson University! Go tigers

and being corrected... and I doubt it's over. Hopefully the "wild west" of the past two years will be a thing of the past in the near future.

even get picked up is really low. Some players enter it and never make another squad. B/c its hard for other teams/coaches to make it all work out with scholarships/academics/personalities to all line up. Which is really bad for the kids that get left behind b/c there goes their free education.

There will be success stories no doubt (especially for the elite players that enter) but the kids that are mediocre players usually have to go to smaller schools or they just give up altogether. Its really a gamble. Thats why Dabo hates it.

I suspect this is exactly what's happening to many that enter the portal. I don't have numbers, but I'm pretty sure there are many who are stuck in the portal, waiting for a call that may never come.

A huge # of kids will have no place to go and no scholarship

Thus - many will never finish school. Sad really.
There are so many in the portal that will have no home.
Then, you have so many leave programs for more playing time, only to be buried on another teams depth chart.
The percentage of good moves for transfers is very very low.
To my knowledge, not a single Clemson transfer has gone on to excel and improve their draft or performance. Melussi was doing ok for a while but got passed on chart and injured. Mike Jones went to LSU and had 19 tackles, no sacks, so, nothing worth bragging about.
