Facts About the 'Colorado' Football Team

I have seen some on here that write about the Colorado team as if it is not a band of mercenaries collected from across the nation.

This team comes from everywhere EXCEPT Colorado. If you look at their roster, you will find only 12 total players that are from Colorado. By comparison, our Tigers have 49 players from the great state of South Carolina on the roster. In addition to that we have 22 from Georgia and 5 from nearby North Carolina. This is what it looks like when you are a school with a regional identity built through recruiting players that identify with your school.

If having 12 in-state players constitutes a football team representative of your state, then our Clemson Tigers have more claim on calling ourselves Alabama (15 players on our roster), than Colorado purporting itself as a Colorado football team.

I am adamant about referring to that team as the Prime Buffaloes.

The previous staff put together the worst roster in D1 and worse than most D2 schools. They gave kids scholarships that had no business playing above D3 or junior college. He had to completely reboot the entire team. Just look at where each of those kids that he didn’t re-new a roster spot for, ended up. I think the highest rated kid from Colorado that was on the roster last year ended up at Sacramento State.

While Clemson has become a national brand and we recruit players from across the nation, I am proud that our team collects a majority of talent from in-state and regional high schools. College football has long been regionally based - an aspect that has separated CFB from the NFL. It has typically been easier to identify with the players of your team because you understand where they came from.

This helps to amplify the downfall of college sports as we know them. Fans have been largely regionally based, cheering for players from their region. I have never seen a larger outlier to this trend than the Prime Buffaloes.

Nobody forced Deion Sanders to kick everyone off the team and hire an entire team of free agents. He chose to do that because he knew that he could do so with impunity. If I wake up one day and Clemson suddenly sucks from years of mismanagement with recruiting and coaching, I personally hope to never see a similar type of culling and player purchase. Not even if that is 'the only way to win'

With all that said, Colorado is an interesting experiment and must watch television. I liken it to a very entertaining funeral for College Football - Amateurism is clearly dead.

I am all for the occasional player from Ohio, California, or the New England area. But I am proud of the fact that our football team is generally built from in-state players and players from the Southeast. Our team has a regional identity unique to college football.

This is a large part of what is being lost with the professionalization of college athletics. We already have pro football on Sundays. We don't need it on Saturdays too. It's hard for me to believe I am the only one that thinks this way.

So now you’ve switched from in state to regional…

Good move considering most of our production during the Dabo era has come from out of state.

Tajh was from Virginia.

Sammy from Florida.

DW, Gallman, and Lawerence from Georgia.

Tee Higgins Tennessee.

DJ California, Cade from Texas.

Shipley is from North Carolina.

Christian Wilkins was from Connecticut

Mackenzie Alexander Florida.

Dexter Lawerence North Carolina.

You get my point. I’m sure there are more but I think the only stand outs I remember being from in state were Mike Williams, Renfrow, and Deandre Hopkins.

I think you may have missed this from my original post. I didn't switch.

I have never diminished the contributions of players from all throughout the Southeast. The Clemson Football recruiting footprint has been the same for a very long time - Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Lately, Alabama and Texas have been states we have established a continued presence. Connecticut and California are major outliers.

Deion didn’t do it cause he knew he could get away with it, he did it cause his name and job were on the line. If he sat there and just let those kids play out their 4 years he knew he would be fired because it was dang near negligence how poorly the previous staff recruited and developed. He literally had no choice but to blow the whole thing up and he cleared all that before the administration hired him. I have no issues with anything Deion has done or how he has handled crept one thing. Having those kids on camera when he told them they were all basically fired and needed to find a new place to go. No problem with him doing it but on film, i had a problem with that. If he’s there long enough he’ll have plenty of Colorado kids.

I like Coach Prime and most of what he puts out there has a very positive message. It was distasteful to cut them all on video for the entire world to see.

It was well within the rules for him to do what he did. I don't fault him, I fault the NCAA and the Senate for eliminating a waiting period for transfers and allowing NIL to be completely unregulated. Deion Sanders has done an incredible job of leveraging the rules that are in place to his advantage.

My issue is not with him being wrong. My issue is with the death of amateurism at the college level.

I don't think he will be at Colorado long enough to have many Colorado kids on the team. Greener pastures will come calling if the success continues.

Re: Why does it matter where they are from?***

I must have seriously underestimated the amount of kids that grew up in Florida, Texas, Georgia, and California idolizing the Colorado Buffaloes and dying to have the opportunity to break the records of Joel Klatt and Kordell Stewart.

My mistake. I forgot Klatt was ever at Colorado until he started praising them in the media during the offseason. Their program has had some great players come through but I don't see the connection that has been the longstanding tradition in college football.

I like seeing players that have been longstanding fans of programs that they commit too.

I am supportive of amateurism and not the outright purchase of players.

I support NIL as a reward for excellence, not as a transaction fee for signing players to your franchise.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I ask again.....why does it matter where they are from?

Sep 20, 2023, 8:44 PM

We've won national titles with most of our KEY players NOT FROM SOUTH CAROLINA.

Who cares where they are from and/or WHY they pick the school they go to......The goal should be to get the best possible talent to CLEMSON regardless of where they're from.

To be fair, because I brought up nearby states that Clemson recruits in other than SC, Colorado has the following players from it's 8 neighboring states:

1 Kicker from Arizona
1 RB from Kansas
1 Safety and 2 Linebackers from Oklahoma

Look at a map of population disribution across the US. Colorado doesn't have NEAR the population to pull from, so not sure why anyone would want to load up on kids from there.

Re: What point are you trying to make?

Sep 20, 2023, 6:24 PM

If you look at the distribution of blue chip football prospects, South Carolina does not have near the level of talent as many other states. However, this is where the majority of our regionally built team has come from.

Our coaches prefer to recruit and develop players rather than purchase them from across the country. Having a regional identity is still important to some, but clearly not all.

If every one of our players were suddenly from Texas and California, I feel like the fanbase would have an issue with it. Maybe I am wrong here.

number of them, especially if you compare the total number as a percentage of total population. Regardless, we're probably in the top half of states for producing talent and bottom half of states for overall population.

We've got kids from ALL over. And we will continue recruiting them.

Not sure how novel it is to hang your hat on SC recruits at a SC school, but look at the depth chart....a whole bunch of them SC kids ain't seeing the field.

There are 5.2 million in South Carolina and 5.8 million in Colorado. Other than Arizona at 7.5 million, Colorado has a higher population than the rest of it's bordering states.

Those are the first ones that will disappear if the 10 win season streak ever comes to an end. Knock on wood. But good riddance if that’s what it takes. No team stays on top forever, but this Clemson Tiger team has always and will always be relevant. Especially with the orange blooded born and bred fans. Some of us aren’t going anywhere. The ones that didn’t bandwagon and have been there through the ‘down’ years are able to continue to find the value in the way the current staff runs the program.

Re: Facts About the 'Colorado' Football Team

Sep 20, 2023, 6:55 PM

The difference is we aren’t 1 of the 5 worst football programs in the country coming off a 1-11 season. There will be a point where region recruiting will come back but the CO program has to be rebuilt and re-estabished for that to happen.

The choice is, do you want that change to be quick or deliberate. If you wait for high school recruiting cycles it will take years to re-establish. Using the portal has helped CO become more competitive now, which will make them more attractive to high school recruits sooner.

It is easy to rail against the portal when there is no context behind it. I feel like Deion did what he did out of necessity and it seems to have been effective at both college programs he has coached. Most people stick with what is working until it doesn’t. He and Dabo coach different programs and have different needs and perspectives. Both are successful but adaptation is a requirement in just about everything we do in life, and nothing works forever without change being involved.

Re: Facts About the 'Colorado' Football Team

The point is that the PRIME-Colorado Experiment will have far-reaching impacts on programs across the country. The acceleration of the professionalization of college football has begun and amateurism is dying out at an ever-increasing rate.

This post was not an indictment on Deion Sanders, moreso on the Pandora's Box of NIL and the Transfer Portal's lack of regulation.

Think about the parents of college football players that can no longer afford to drive over to their son's game each weekend. Think about the downfall of regional rivalries because fans can't identify with the players on their team and have less of a buy-in.

Major Congratulations to the PROTAL Pumpers - Everything that is wrong with the NFL is coming to College Football.
