Why do we call them Coots?

Nov 21, 2013, 9:34 PM

I know this will sound stupid and I swear I am not a COOT, but I have been calling them coots for years. I was just wondering the origin or how that came about. Gamecocks - Chickens, Peeps, but Coots please tell me!!!

some coot was calling us taters, thinking it would offend us...but Clemson is proud of its agriculture background. I can not remember who it was, but a TigerNet member said they were like coots...a duck-like bird that eats its own dung off the bottom of the pond.

you joined in 2008. "coot" was around a lot longer than that***

how can anybody say this about a Coot. It is a duck like bird but it eats insects and plants - not dung! also they are quite tasty.

Absolutely true. The cajuns esp. love their gizzards. They should be considered a noble waterfowl compared to dirtpeckers.....

the crazy old man definition of coot. The spelling of coot is very close to the shortened nickname of c**** and "crazy old man" seemed more derisive than just referring to another bird.

Looking at that picture makes me more confused.

Their mascot is as much like a "coot" as it is an ostrich. No resemblance. Essentially we could call them the name of any bird out there. We could start calling them geese? Anyone on board with that?

There's something in these hills.

Let's settle this...

Nov 22, 2013, 8:32 AM

CRUMP! Can you search the archives of TNet to find the very first occurrence of the term "Coot"?
