Why did we choose to defend the west end zone?

It put the sun in our receivers eyes and kept UNC from having to deal with our student section.
Obviously we won anyway but I thought it was a curious decision.

I've noticed the sun more this year and which way the team is facing. Must be getting old, but never thought of that until this season.

The sun has been an issue later in the season and also that part is closed in and actually loader than the hill side would be my guess.

Because they wanted me to see the UNC fumble inside the 5 and the Wiggins strip up close and personal.
From that angle, I also saw Tez Walker push off Wiggins facemask to get open and catch a pass. It's amazing a Ref 10 or so yards away can't see that.

I like to see the Tigers begin play on the offense when they win the toss. The sun definitely affected the offense in the Tigers first possession . Amazing that little things like that can change a game.
This week the Tigers will have to be aware of “bottle tossing” in the stadium. I wonder if the officials could begin the game with a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty???

you always want the ball to start the second half... always. Sun is in everyone's eyes... was only a factor in the first half and UNC had to deal with the lower sun angles ...

saw that from the west endzone and immediately knew that ref missed the call. Clear push off the facemask to create separation.

No clue. But if I’m picking, I’d rather have the sun in my receivers eyes looking back for the ball then my quarterback looking forward downfield.

This is the right answer. Their defense had to stare into the sun, as well as their punt returners, and so did their offense. The primary cause of the punt muff for ND was the guy staring straight up at the sun.

I think there are pluses and minuses on both sides. The sun was in Mayes eyes

And also in the eyes of the holes’ defensive backs. At any rate half of the field was in shade by kickoff; it was pretty tough to see up in the stands but I imagine it was a lot better at field level with the west stands shielding the filed.

I was thinking exactly the opposite, but I see your point. I thought it would be a big plus for us in that 1st Q since Maye would be starring into the sun on every play. I guess the lopsided 1st Q atats would say that you were right, but at the time I thought it was a plus for us.

Looking into the sun seemed to affect Drake Maye during the 1st quarter.

Possibly for the punt return game? Usually the sun will be down after 1st quarter for the 3:30 kick. High punts will force the returners eyes to look directly into sun. Receivers can usually pick up a low ball when looking back that direction. Just a hunch.
