Ugh, tipping is running amok...

So here's my (not a) boomer rant...
My local BurgerFi now has koisks at the front to enter your order. Two yuuuuge screens. At the end, it asks for a tip. Tip for what? For you to yell my name out so I can walk up and get my food? What service was I provided where you earned a tip?
Then last night we went out to a nice steakhouse for my son's birthday. We go there 2-3x a year. I noticed they switched their math at the bottom where they give you the tip percentages and value to 'help' you figure out the tip from pre-tax value to post-tax value. Now the 18%, 20%, and 25% were higher since they were using the post tax number. I've noticed more and more places switching to post tax values.
/rant.

It will only get worse with the peasantry no longer getting taxed on tips.

Situation two, how much can the sales tax really add to the tip amount. If it is enough to hurt, you had no #### business going to the steak house in the first place.

Do not tip at fast food spots unless someone there has gone to great lengths to enhance things Usually tip 20% at normal restaurants with wait staff. At high end, steak houses, ie, ill tip well on food, 10-15% on wine cost. If i take my own wine, ill add tip if wait staff tends properly to serving the wine.
Yesterday, picked up a take n bake pizza from Joe’s, half price day. Tipped $3 on $22 pizza that was $11 cause half price day.

This was back in May, we're going to our car and we have a conversation with a very friendly but extremely intoxicated man wearing a Papa Doc's shirt was making his way up to the establishment. He was downing a Coors Light. It was about 7 p.m. He had a huge pistol on his hip, I think maybe a 1911 but couldn't get a good look.
I hope his night went well for him.

Tipping at a fast food place

no, thanks.
I tip at restaurants, locals, where I go pick up the food - usually 20%, but it really is not that much $$ as our orders are usually less than $50.
There is a local place we go and sit and talk a long time with friends, so I always add more to the regular tip as we are occupying a table where the server could have another seating for a tip - this is rare but always happens when three couples get together.

Ticks me off. It's like ATM fees. When you spend years getting something for no extra cost, like money from an ATM or a Subway sammich, and then they add a fee for the ATM and TIP to the subway sammich, ugggg.

the one downtown next to TDs closed a year or so back, and now the one out on 123 across from the Hampton Inn has shuttered.
There was a long period when Subways never closed, new ones popped up everywhere. I think America is finally realizing the complete suckage of this franchise.

I love subs, but no sub sandwich is worth $12.
I hate it because I used to have 2 or 3 per week (not Subway usually, but SubStation II or Firehouse or Quiznos) when you could get a good sub meal for $6 or so. Now it's $15 for a sub and a bag of chips. Sorry, that's not a good enough return on investment to me.
For $15 I can make a week's worth of them at home.

My rationale is that food and beverage service workers are mostly young people getting started in life and their base pay and benefits are poor to non-existent. The great majority of these service workers in Clemson are good individuals who work hard. I appreciate their work ethic.

Awkward "love". I smile as I hit other and put 0.
Local Latin place is owned by my bud/neighbor. Few yrs back go in, girl turns sceewnand says add a tip. I said no thanks, hit 0. She mumbled "####### or ####"...whatever. few min later the owner walks out hugs Mrs Pabsts, gives me a bro hug and we talk about family. Girl looks over and just loads our order with extra food. It's take out...no tip!

Here is my thought process on this
3

I am extremely fortunate to have a great job.
The Panera employee isn’t as fortunate. I can give them $3.
The steakhouse waiter or waitress isn’t as fortunate either. I can find $20+ for them.
Bartender at dive bar, probably 40%+ tip. Bartender at chain, 20-25%. Bartenders in chains typically make some good coin and many times get split from the waitresses too. So I am probably the least generous to them.
I am a big tipper. I think most of us on here can afford to be generous. If you can’t, cook at home, don’t go out.
