Who were the best Clemson/NFL players at each position

Aug 17, 2013, 3:32 AM

Watching Pats/Bucs preseason game got me thinking:

Didn't see Bowers - he needs a revelation/transformation
like his junior year at Clemson.

Started wondering who were the best Clemson/NFL players at
at each position the past 40 or so years; at 52, that's as
far back as I can remember.

QB - Steve Fuller; haven't had a pro bowl level NFL QB or
even a long term starter - suprising

RB - Terry Allen, C.J. Spiller

WR - Dwight Clark (The Catch, 2 Pro Bowls), Jerry Butler

TE - Bennie Cunningham, but maybe Dwayne Allen in time

OL - Jeff Bostic stands out the most as member of the HOGS

DT - Michael Dean Perry (6 Pro Bowls), Chester McGlockton
(4 Pro Bowls), Fridge

DE - Trevor Pryce, Jim Stuckey

LB - Levon Kirkland, Ed McDaniel

CB - Donnell Woolford, Justin Miller

S - Brian Dawkins (8 Pro Bowls), Charlie Waters (3 PBs)

P - Chris Gardocki, Dale Hatcher

K - Donald Igwebuike

Safety has probably been the best position for CU/NFL
players with Waters getting a HOF nomination and Dawkins
possibly a future HOFer and Kinard a good NFL safety.
Either defensive tackle or linebacker would be 2nd.
Probably missed somebody really good, esp @ LB.

Got another running back in mind.

Kevin Mack - played 9 seasons with Cleveland Browns and was in the Pro Bowl 2 years (85 & 87)

Linebackers to consider

Leroy Hill of Seattle Seahawks
He's been in the NFL for 8 seasons and has been a starter for the most part. Helped get Seattle in the Super Bowl in 2005. Free Agent right now due to legal issues.

Wayne Simmons - Played 4.5 years for Green Bay and played in Super Bowl with them in 1996.

Punter

Harry Newsome - Played for 9 seasons in NFL with Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings.

Not necessarily good, but actually holds 1 NFL record

6 of his punts blocked in 1988

Harry Newsome....good one....if the topic was best former Wake Forest players in the NFL. Interesting thing about Newsome was that him and Dale Hatcher were HS teammates at Cheraw HS at the same time. Wow 2 future NFL punters on same small HS football team.

Honorable Mention

Banks McFadden was a first-round draft choice of the Brooklyn Dodgers of the NFL, the fourth selection of the draft, and still the highest draft choice in Clemson history. He played one year in the NFL with the Dodgers and led the NFL in yards per rush.
