Who remembers the hail storm

HAIL STORM1963 Georgia GameThe most unusual moment in Memorial Stadium history from a weather standpoint took place when Clemson faced Georgia in 1963. When the game started on this October 12 day, the temperature reached 84 degrees.
But by halftime, the temperature dropped to 57 degrees and the most torrential hailstorm in the history of the Upstate took place. The halftime show had to be cancelled and the 24,000 fans in attendance ran for cover.
Clemson Head Coach Frank Howard and Georgia Head Coach Johnny Griffith met under the stands and delayed the start of the second half for 30 minutes. The field looked like a sheet of ice. Clemson’s grounds crew cleared the field as much as possible.
The Tigers dealt with the conditions the best during the second half and tied the score 7-7 in the third quarter, which ended up being the final score.

I was there and there wasn't any accumulation. By the end of the game it had gotten really cold for sure, so a little incidental sleet/snow may have occurred by the time Woody-to-Rod Gardner happened.

The only time my Granddaddy left his seat in the stadium before the clock was 0:00. He was a 1910 Clemson grad and was on the football team. He went to every home game and every away game if he could go to and back in the same day until in his 80s.

Everyone took shelter by the concession stands. Weirdest thing I've seen. Back then you wore a coat and tie to the game.

It's an usual weather phenomenon where a chicken wearing a dress jumps out of a cake while fire extinguishers stolen from the local high school are discharged. Oddest thing I ever saw.

I was a student then and the hail was a wild halftime show. We had to go back to the dorms to change clothes. You are correct, the field was completely white with hale before the teams came back onto the field.

Was a HS junior then. Huddled under the stands crunched together with both UGA and our fans. Water from the melting hail was draining on some. The dye from a red felt hat stained my shirt. We left after learning the second half would be delayed and drove back to G'ville.

Often remember this game. Was one of the first 65 coeds to live in the new girls’ dorm on campus. Had to run back across campus to change my dress and come back. (We weren’t allowed to where slacks or jeans outside the dorm.)
