Who remembers tennis ball cannons?

Who remembers tennis ball cannons? You take 5 or 6 beer cans, cut open the ends, duct tape them together and leave the last end intact. Then you punch a hole in the end, drop a tennis ball in, pour some lighter fluid in the hole, hold a match to the end and boom. When testing it out on E2, the first time it sailed down the entire long hall without touching the floor. The RC came out to see what was going just as we lit off the 2nd one. It sailed right past him, he turned around and went back in his room without saying a word. These things were so powerful that we once hit the quad from a dorm room on the back side of E section. Wow were we stupid! Don't try this. It could have gone stupidly bad!

We used the actual tennis ball can back home, but never at Clemson. Not us, but another group decided to put gasoline on the tennis ball before launching. What could go wrong. No injuries but they did start a brush fire. The fire was quickly contained, but it ruined it for the rest of us. The authorities cracked down on them, and threatened to consider it a dangerous weapon.

I loved the RAs, "Just don't cause me to lose my job and I'll leave you to it. By the way, the surprise room inspection will be Wed afternoon."

in were very stout back then, much thicker and solid than beer cans, or any cans today. Duct tape 6 of them together, the last one had 5 holes leading into the barrel and one on the end. Squirt lighter fluid into the end and also down the barrel, then spin it to spread it out. Light the end and the boom sounded like a 12 gauge shotgun going off. We did this as teens in the 70s. Had the cops called on us more than once. We learned to fire it off about 5 times and then retreat back into the house. Yes, it would send a tennis ball out of sight.

Then we got the bright idea to also soak the tennis ball in lighter fluid. That worked great a few times, to launch a flaming ball about 100 yards. But it started a fire in the woods behind my friends house and the Fire Dept was called to put it out. That was the end of that. LOL

Also known as potato gun.

Son, we made one of those up at Lake Junaluska when I was about ten or 12 `

years old out of SCHLITZ beer cans and duct tape. When we fired that off over the lake down around where the tennis courts are, it echoed through those mountains something fierce. After about the fith or sixth blast ...the police showed up......

Don’t remember anything like that, but we did have a potato gun made out of PVC pipe a threaded fitting on the end. We would use WD-40 and fill the cap and Screw it on the back, shove, a potato down the potato gun barrel head, sharpen it, so with shave off the size of a title make an airtight. A grill lighter was fixed through the screw cap. Said he just pull the trigger a A grill lighter was fixed through the screw cap so you just pull the trigger and it lights inside the cap , boooom! one time we shot a potato so far it went over the tree line and out of sight. The recoil was similar to a 12 gauge with birdshot.
