They're complaining because this was an internationally humiliating turn of events for the Chinese government. The get caught making an incursion in our airspace. With a freakin' balloon - some mighty show of force right there. This is how you smuggle cell phones into prisons.
It was an incursion but not a threat. Since it was the size of "three school buses" we didn't shoot it down over land, we monitored it as it crossed the country, and knocked it down as soon as it was off-shore.
Cooler heads will prevail, but I think it would be fun for Papa Joe to tell Xi Jinping to pound sand (I suppose he effectively has) and that if they keep complaining, he'll Monroe Doctrine the balloon over Latin American into oblivion.
