On the early 90's I remember thinking they just decreased theirs chances of winning a conference championship....

At that time the ACC was the premier conference

In the early 90s the ACC was making more money than the SEC. In hindsight, Clemson should have taken the offer. When we turned the SEC down, the offered membership to SCar. If you remember, Danny Ford had been run off a few years before and the Lennon Admin brought in Hatfield with the intent to de-emphasize the football program. The Alumni eventually ran Lennon off, but the damage was done. We are still fighting our way back.
