My guess is as soon as someone can explain to ESPN why they should pay Clemson more to be in the SEC when they can get them for less in the ACC.

TV inventory and ratings. They can make more money from eyeballs watching a Clemson-Tennessee or Bama match up in Week 4 on ABC @3:30 or 8pm vs. a Clemson- Wake Forest or Boston College match up in Week 4.

Yes. The Clemson eyeballs will increase, but more importantly, they opposing teams eyeballs will increase, in some cases, by orders of magnitude. The networks want matchups that draw ratings. Clemson and FSU do that.

ABC @3:30. They chose that over Tenn vs Vandy.. so why why would they care?
The SEC and Disney have thoroughly convinced the world that the 10th best team in the SEC would beat every team in the ACC. They have no problems filling the prime time slots already.
They don't "need" any more teams to fill football slots.
Fox and Disney have already seized control of college football TV revenue . I don't know what will happen but i don't think it will be about college football TV revenue.

Because it's about ratings, and no longer about markets. Markets are saturated and the difference in the number of households that carry the B1G network (The largest) to the ACC network (The smallest) is about 2 million households. With carriage fees on the decline, and the networks going DTC, the networks need to fill their inventory with games that draw eyeballs. Clemson and FSU do that. While Fox and Disney have seized the football TV revenue, they are still competing with each other, and Clemson and FSU are key chess pieces for an area of the country the B1G (Fox) wants to get into and the SEC (ESPN) wants to keep them out of. The market will continue to consolidate until the largest brands all reside within the P2.

This is a good question, and I don't think the answers already provided actually hit on the primary reason.
Yes, they would optimally pay Clemson (and FSU) the current rates, as they are a great value. However, in order to do that, they also have to pay the rest of the ACC the same rate, which are bad values, as most of the teams don't pull their weight ratings-wise. So if ESPN can ONLY pay Clemson and FSU, they could afford to pay us SEC rates and still save money if they can then kill the ACC contract. Which they have an opening to do with their 2027 option.
Therefore, I'll answer your question and OP's question - I think they year is 2027 that everyone is aiming for, as that's the year ESPN can drop the ACC without any legal issues.

2026 or 2027 at the latest. When it’s officially announced where we are headed everyone give their gamecock buddies a hard time because they swear on their life we are staying in the ACC until 2036.
Clemson isn’t going to waste money on fighting this in court and waste all this money on a legal battle if it doesn’t have a leg to stand on. They went into this knowing there’s a high probability they win otherwise we wouldn’t have sued.

I don't think they went into this thinking there is a high probability they can win. They went into this to try and learn more details through discovery and to force the ACC to show their cards. They also want the courts to establish some of the legal foundation and to rule on it. Then they can figure out what they are facing and make the necessary decisions on how good of a case they really think they have. I really think they are trying to move this to a settlement discussion but not sure the ACC feels like they are ready to do that right now.
