What's the Score Guys?!?!

May 9, 2012, 9:07 AM

Sorry to bring up a few gripes, but as a distance listener to Tiger baseball games, I am forced to track the WCCP feed on-line. Has anyone else noticed that it is almost impossible for Munson and/or Philpott to give us the score or updates of play? There is no shortage of ad spots, stories about Clemson football or how they both like the free chow provided to them by the Cajun Cafe, but, guys enough!!! Examples - a recent weekend game, former Tiger Tight End Duane Allen being interviewed. Nice touch except that you could hear the clink of the bat on the ball and the radio guys pressed ahead with the interview without telling us what was going on (this happens all the time). During a recent College of Charleston game, an inning ended and all we heard was "We go to the top of the seventh with the Tigers still down?" Huh? Score please? As proof of my gripe, try something yourself - when Munson/Philpott call the games, sample the times it takes for them to say the scores. You'll see. There's been times when Munson took over an inning and a half to call the score. One last gripe - if we are going to have to suffer through Tim Bourrett on color, someone should remind him that stories about Notre Dame have nothing to do with Tiger Baseball. We get it - you worship Digger Phelps. Hopefully there are others out there who have noticed the same things or have the same frustrations with the broadcasts. Again, sorry for the rant folks. Minor, petty issues, but still frustrating.

I agree 100% about Dan Scott. He made the game exciting, not only when Clemson was doing good but when the opponents made a remarkable play or hit. Wish Dan was back.

While aggravating, all I can say is give Philpott some

time. I believe this is his first year calling our baseball games.

Agreed on all counts. Very frustrating to hear an aluminum bat "ding" (often several) in the background without a word from the announcers regarding what happened. Also don't give a rats behind about football or basketball. You're covering Clemson BASEBALL, not sports in general. Thank goodness with the video feed you can just cut the audio off. Never thought I'd miss Dan but I'm getting there.

I'd be willing to give Philpott the benefit of the doubt except that I think he is trying to copy Munson's style (delivery, inflection, etc.). Compare the two to Mahoney. Bob is somewhat quiet and non-emotional, but at least he can inject observations of the game while still keeping the listener up to speed on what is going on. But, if you tune in late to a game Munson is broadcasting you are guaranteed that you will hear lots of advertising copy for every apartment complex in Clemson - and not the score. Unfortunately, unless changes are made (and I don't see that happening), we are stuck.
