What's the closest you've come to dying due to someone else's...

Stupid or careless actions? Whether someone you know or not?
Probably 12 or so years ago, my wife was driving and I was shotgun heading into downtown Greenville on 385. It's night time. Right before we got to Bi-Lo Center (and it's still the Bi-Lo Center, shove that Bon Secuors crap up your butt). We haven't hit the speed decrease really yet and we're coming in hot.
Some person driving the other way suddenly drives into the other lane (I can't remember if there is a median there or not) and comes right at us, and I mean coming in fast. It was too dark to tell why they did this, but it was so sudden and so fast, my wife didn't react. Pretty sure it was more of a scream. And it was just headlights right in our faces.
Just before they struck us head on, they swerved back onto the correct side of 385. I'm certain with the speed they were traveling plus ours, and in my wife's little dinky car a the time, we weren't walking away from that if we collided.
We had to pull over for a moment and both of us catch our breath. My chest was pounding so hard, I worried I was going to have a heart attack. Thought of this today and just reminds how you can do all the right things on the road but you're at the mercy of other idiots.

I was walking down the street and got to a 4 way stop. A car was coming but I thought it would surely stop. Man that dude flew right threw the stop sign and missed me by a few feet. An older lady saw it happening and tried to get his attention by blowing her horn but apparently his radio blaring Taylor Swift drowned it out.
It was a close one.

But I grabbed a flagpole and did three big spins before letting go, doing two perfect flips in the air and landing on an awning.
Stood up, brushed the dust off me, looked at beautiful model-esque lady walking by and said “elevator’s broken” and winked.

some guy comes screeching to a halt beside me in a minivan and jumps out yelling about being a doctor but he smelled like he had literally bathed in a vat of 2003 Domaine De La Romanee Conti Grand Cru. He opens the hatch of the minivan to grab what looked like a $49 replica sword from Home Depot and starts waving it around and declaring that "he needs to do surgery immediately". I was lucky to barely limp away from this lunatic!

late in the calendar year every year for the last decade, I invest fully heart and soul in Clemson basketball, only to be violated in January and February by bad coaching and bad luck, ripping my fan heart out and stomping it flat. Does that count?

dropped a cinder block into the road and just missed the front of my girlfriends (at the time) car. It hit the ground in front of us, bounced back up, took out the radiator, dented up the hood and cracked the front window. Had they thrown that cinder block a 1/4 second later, it would have directly hit the hood or window. I dunno if it would have killed me, but there's 100% chance it wouldn't have been fun.
I called the Highway Patrol and he must have been right behind us, because he was there almost immediately. We were pulled over because it ruptured the radiator and was spewing coolant all over the road. He stopped, saw we were OK, said he'd be back, and went and tried to find them. When he got back, he said when he drove up they had an old swing set that they were fixing to throw off the overpass. There were 3 or 4 of them, and they dropped the swing set and took off running in different directions, and the cop couldn't get any of them.

Get through Anderson and headed south on Highway 28 to Abbeville. This is before the day of cell phones so not sure what they guy was doing, but right before I get to a fork in the road (I believe where Due West Highway hooks in), a full size pickup truck comes across the centerline into my lane and is headed straight at me. I veer off to the right, I'm talking all four tires off the roadway and into the shoulder. Guy finally corrects and gets back into the correct lane after he passes by me. I guess at one time in my life I had pretty quick reactions and paid attention. At least I did that day. No way I would have walked away from that one.

I once bumped into Shawn Weatherly downtown at the Bookstore.
Had I acted on the 1st thought that entered my mind, I have no doubt that Dwight Clark and the 3 other football players who were with her would have killed me.
To this day, I question if my hesitation and failure to act was the correct move or not.

Not really stupid or careless, but on a year off from college, I drove a roll-back truck for a material handling company, delivering and picking up forklifts. Was in the Georgia mountains one day with two 15K pound lifts on the back, and a tractor-trailer coming the opposite way had lost its brakes. Had to be doing seventy or better coming downhill round a curve on a two lane road. Steep drop off to my right... I eased over much as I could without going over, and when he came whooshing by, our side mirrors nearly hit. Adrenaline rush was so bad, my head started throbbing like hale within about 60 seconds and I had to find a spot to pull over and collect myself.
Surprisingly, the dude made it round that curve without dying himself.

almost blind and almost deaf but insisted on driving the forklift. Let's just say the only thing OSHA related was the old yellow paint on the metal poles.
Anyways dude kept backing me into the racks with the forklift with a massive weight and a metal rack on each side of my rib cage.
Almost killed me twice before I told the boss either he gets Pete off the forklift or I make a call to OSHA.
Pete was no longer allowed on the forklift.
Pete cussed me out.

One August afternoon my crew and I had finished a very hot day framing a house up Hwy 85. Heading back to Easley I was sitting between the Glouse brothers in Jerold's 76 F150. No air so the windows were down, the tmep was probably still high 90s maybe 100.
We weren't exactly bumper to bumper but the traffic was about as heavy as it got back in the 1990's. Everyone was doing about 75 in both lanes. Cars in the fast lane moved a few MPH faster.
Suddenly vehicles in the fast lane started making confusing maneuvers and those in front of us swerved some radically and some just to the edge of the edge of the pavement.
Two cars and a flatbed loaded with trash roofing shingles hit the median. In an instant a car passes going the wrong way in the fast lane. I looked back briefly and saw others taking the median.
It was silent in the cab of that truck but the brother riding shotgun looked at me about the time I looked at him. He said, 'Did you see that!?!.
I just looked with amazement and said, 'We didn't even swerve.' He said, 'Jerold,' the driver, 'Didn't even see it. Jerold said, 'See what?'
Franks said, 'You ok?' I said 'Yeah, I reckon, I had to #### anyway.'

to make money. 2nd shift so left at midnight, so I am tired after 8 hour shift, it was cold and rainy and I was driving my MG on a two lane road from Calhoun Falls to Abbeville, round a curve doing 60 probably (that car maybe could do 80 at best) and there was a cow in the road staring at me. Luckily it was in the left lane, had it been in the right lane, Papa G would not be here.
I think I drove 25 the rest of the way home.

I was a sophomore in high school and on a family trip w parents and brother. We were camping there to fish for small mouth and trout everyday on lake Cayuga.
Brother of was a grade higher than me, and parents had to go to Ithaca for groceries. Of course we got high as hell smoking canadien beasters then my brother recommended we climb over the fence at the park and scale down to the river. It didn’t look foreboding at first so we started. About halfway down we realize the gorge is much too steep but we can no longer go up, so we are jumping from tree to tree downward hanging on for our lives. One slip and would go tumbling down the gorge. At the time I did feel like I was gonna die.
Clearly we did make it down the gorge and to the bottom. Then had to hike back up using the road. Parents never even knew
