Been to both. I prefer Easley atmosphere. Less touristy

But if you want big touristy definitely do Pendleton. I’ll be eating there tomorrow night actually.
I liked the Williamston location the best as it was super intimate and homely.

Hwy 81 location is not as crowded location and is not all that far from the Pendleton one. Food is the same. Venue is not as good, but is still in a pretty good spot.

Hudson’s in Lexington? No way. Lived there for years, just moved away a little over a year ago. I have eaten at Hudson’s plenty of times and it’s fine but not the best SC has to offer.
Just in the area, City Limits and little pigs depending on what you are after. The bbq at shealys is decent at best but those sides are something else and you gotta have that pulley bone.

Sister died 25 years ago and I went to her grave site in Orangeburg. First time eaten there in 25 years ago. Best hash and rice , slaw and barbecue - nothing has changed except they don’t have the Sunbeam on table bit you pick it up at end of buffet.
In our neck of woods, Martin’s on the way to Anderson on 178 about 5 miles out of Liberty. Cook the whole pig

My homemade BBQ. Since I started smoking my own, the restaurants just aren’t as good. But, The Smokin Pig is pretty good, as is Shealy’s in Batesburg-Leesville.

Shealy's is hard to beat as was Jackie Hite's Bar-b-que in Leesville. Did not have the selection of food on the buffet, but the BBQ was good. That place was in business for 40 years. When Jackie died, the business closed.

Jackie Hites! He had a pig pull every Friday and his fresh skins on the buffet had a little meat on them. I loved Jackie. Quite the character.

At Jackie Hites I would get a plate of rice and milk gravy and use the skins like a spoon to eat it. Jackie fried chicken was great also

I haven't found any that I like better than mine, whether it's cooked on the Orion smoker or z grill pellet smoker. And yes, I've eaten at the Smoking Pig and Shealy's. But I've never been able to beat Sease Dowd's pork hash in Pomaria. We make special trips to Newberry or Prosperity just to stock up for the freezer.

I don’t offer it up as the best or anything, but I will send people out of the way to pick some up for me whenever they are passing through (I live in FL).
My aunt was from Newberry, and we always got some every visit. We actually went there once when I was kid…I don’t remember a whole lot but I remember big pots, gray smell. And that hash. Not sure how we got to visit like that, don’t recalll.
I stock up whenever I pass through,it’s just far less often.

They have amazing fried chicken somehow and all the sides are great.
Dukes in Orangeburg has better BBQ on their buffet but less selection of sides.
Docs in Columbia is another really good BBQ buffet. Not as good as it was 5 years or so ago but still good.

And also must mention Winningham Meats in Ridgeville for their hash…simply outstanding!

20 years ago there was a joint in Lake City that served the best I have ever eaten. It was open seating with a bunch of long cafeteria tables. When you sent through the line they just loaded you up with everything. No choices. $10 at the door and you got a big prison tray full of food.

Georgia has plenty of fine Q. I generally stick to my own, but seriously, it’s just not that hard. It’s like saying they can’t cook grits in GA. It’s fine to think you live in the best place, but it’s not the only place…I mean people do eat in other states, lol. I’d go with Henry’s on WHB in Greenville, but there is history for me there.

Believe it or don’t …. But I’m well into my 80’s and I began going to the Beacon when I was in grade school. Back in the 40’s it was unbelievable and it still is top notch.
I think some of the same guys are still working there!!!!
Very very popular place in those days and I still go there when I’m in the area, Just a short trip from Inman! Go Panthers!

Glad you mentioned Browns. My Grandma used to make my Granddaddy drive 45 mins one way to go there and would always bring back a few pounds for us. Good stuff.
Original Scott’s in Hemingway is dang good. Just make sure you have cash no credit card taken there.

be quite as good since Johnny Wise died several years ago! Another underrated place is Prices, off Hwy 378 between Gilbert and Lake Murray. One of the few places that still cooks over wood! And besides their barbecue, their fried catfish filets are absolutely the best I have ever had. The catfish is only available for Friday lunch and Saturday evening. A side of theirs that is outstanding is the squash casserole!

Shealy's in Batesburg-Leesville for the classic buffet excursion.
Hudson's in Lexington for group action take out. Vinegar and mustard sauces are both top notch.
Duke's in Orangeburg whenever in the vicinity.
Maurice's Piggie Park as the convenient standard in Columbia for the quick fix. Palmetto Pig in Columbia when going All In.
Go BBQ!

When my Nephew said mine was better than Smokin Pig, I was happy but that made me wonder about places are better than Smokin Pig. When I get to Greenville, I'll give Lewis a try.

Best Cobbler is Aunt Sues down the street from Table Rock.

I like Smokin Pig’s cobbler but it’s a joke compared to Aunt Sue’s.
Blueberry, strawberry, cherry, peach… it’s insane. It’s so good you don’t even need ice cream.

Tim Willis - the guy who says “And now the song that shakes the south land” at all clemson games is a die-hard bbq conniseur.
He says the best place for Smoked Chicken is Circle M.
Smoking pig in Pendleton is really good; they’ve gotten big so idk if the quality has changed.
Scott’s in Hemingway is great too - gotta love that vinegar based sauce.
Henry’s in Greenville is solid.
I’ve not had Lewis but I think that’s gotta be the best brisket in the state.
I had ribs at Bucky’s bbq in GVL once and I thought they were the best ribs I had ever had.

I travel for work all over SC and GA and a huge BBQ fan. Best smoked pork is Henry’s smokehouse in Greenville…best Brisket is Smokin Pig, Lewis’ in Greenville is good as well. If I had to choose anywhere to eat BBQ in SC it would be Smokin Pig but Henry’s isn’t far behind.

Big ol' double door smoker my daddy gave me as a wedding gift 20 years ago. Brought it out from Texas when I married my Clemson bride.
I ship in my mesquite. Confuses the heck out of the neighbors. Smoke a wet-aged-til-it-bends 15 lb brisket for Thxgiving. Do a couple good slabs of beef ribs for Christmas. And 25 lbs of ribeyes for the annual NYE gathering.
Then go on a purge diet til March.
Otherwise, head over to Lewis. Pitmaster there learned his craft at the great Franklin pit a stone's throw from the UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS!
HOOK EM HORNS!

I agree with most of the posts. One I didn’t see was Sweatman’s outside Holly Hill. Only open on wknds and fairly limited buffet but great whole hog and awesome skins if you get there early.
If you’re ever in NE GA, there’s a good place called Gumlog BBQ just over the border in Gumlog GA (btwn Toccoa and Lavonia) that’s worth trying if you’re in the area. Being in GA they have stew instead of hash and they don’t have rice, but still a good place to try.

Brown's BBQ in Kingstree...Ask for belly meat when getting a pound or two to go. Also get a gallon of their BBQ gravy that was cooked into the whole hog(you must ask for it this way as they have it also not cooked into the hog) . Go Thursday-Saturday as they cook hogs on Wednesday nights and the BBQ will be the freshest on those days.

A great way to help you decide which is the best BBQ is to visit the site DestinationBBQ.com. Jim Roller does a superb job of speaking the South Carolina BBQ language. While you are there purchase a copy of his new Going Whole Hog book or I believe you can download a digital copy. It is full of recipes for making hash, sauces and hog. It also includes a map which shows every BBQ joint in SC.

Smokin pig hands down Moes bbq in. Greenville and Pawleys island is good also. I know I am breaking some rules here but a ride north of the border to Charlotte heading out towards weddington there is a place called improper pig its close with smoking pig. Midwood smokehouse is good for Texas style. Just those mostly

I grew up in the Pee Dee area and there were two places I went: 1. Country Cousins - a bit of a drive but worth the effort 2. Rogers BBQ - this was my go-to because it was easy to get there and I visited weekly. Back in the day, it was only open Thur, Fri and Sat so you had to plan for those days. It has changed ownership at least once and although the recipes have slightly changed, I still make it a point to go when I'm back in the Pee Dee which isn't often.
Either case, I'm a huge fan of vinegar-based BBQ and the low country is the best.
