To those who say we have to "hit the portal" to sign some DE talent.....

A couple of things here. We signed some highly-rated guys who just haven't been very good. Denhoff (consistently makes the wrong reads), Patterson (bust) and Hoffler (very undersized) just haven't produced.
If you watched Standford, they ran AWAY from Parker on almost every play. They knew we couldn't contain at weakside DE. That's where all their rushing yards came from.
Once Woods returns, the defense will play much better.
It is what it is. Sometimes you hit a home run (Parker, Woods). Sometimes, you sign a guy and after two years, they produce (Beasley, Ferrell, Bryant). And sometimes, you sign guys and they don't. That's where we're at.
The good news is that some guys showed some flashes last night. I thought Lawson played very well. I also think the future is bright with Mayo and Kissayi (who left after the spring game, my bad).

You are quite correct @GSCtiger...somehow I forgot about that. Thanks for pointing that out. Well, the future isn't quite as "bright" as I thought but hopefully, we can hit on someone in this cycle.

What youre actually giving here is an argument for the portal

At a place like Jawja and Bama those guys you reference, that just don’t pan out after 2 years, end up at a group of 5 school and then the elite team will replace him with either a portal addition or a new 5 star from high school. Dabo’s never gonna run guys off for being over recruited; just saying that’s an advantage at other schools because they don’t mind cutting guys.

Not really. We all know how Dabo runs things. So given that Dabo won't change, that is the situation we find ourselves in. That is part of the recruiting pitch--we aren't like Bama or Jawja who oversign guys.

Talent from the portal at defensive end since it resulting in them having what some are calling the best DE in the country. We can still differentiate the program without the roster becoming stagnant with personnel who has not, and will not, contribute on the field. Being good in high school shouldn’t earn you an automatic 5 year pass to eat at the trough; this is big time football you need to earn your spot every year, every practice. We got a lot of guys you only see on the VLOG or in the 4th quarter of blowouts, and we don’t have anywhere near the depth we had when we were winning natties.
Also, “given that Dabo won’t change” is a really poor excuse to be at a competitive disadvantage to other elite schools.

Can’t you do both? Sign a stud hs senior AND a STUD portal junior? You then don’t bust up the rotation if you missed a bit on previous hs recruits and you also aren’t “running them off”. They can choose to stay and compete, stay and not compete, or transfer. Our freshman WRs are taking away snaps from upperclassmen just as if they’d come from the portal for a cross reference.

Great post!
Lawson just needed to put some weight on. He can get after the passer like nobody's business; but wasn't quite able to help with holding the edge on run plays.
I think the coaches have a lot more trust in him now. I saw him in there on early downs( he had previously on had 3rd and long snaps).
Hoffler seems like he has potential - but seems a bit light in the pants to me. Maybe also doesn't have that "dawg" about him either.
The young guys are coming as you said, "thankfully I think we have time to develop them"! If the offense can continue to grow and put pressure on other teams. We have a chance to develop the DE position over the next few weeks(FSU and Wake).

You just gave a perfect explanation of why Clemson needs to use the portal. Is the backfill guys that didn’t pan out.

FSU-which is Portal University was supposed to have a full defensive line going to NFL—not looking so special I think when Peter Woods is back we’ll be just fine.
Take big Dec from giants and they’re junk -one guy can make big difference

DE is a spot that makes sense for a portal addition next year though.
Woods probably slides back inside to DT since we are losing Capehart, Page, and Williams. Woods, Burley, and Green.
Parker is great. But Denhoff and Lawson don’t have starter ability. Both are nice pieces that add depth, but we can’t rely on them as starters. If Hoffler doesn’t take that next step, then we’ll need a viable starter opposite of Parker.
Mayo will have zero experience. The fact that he’s not already contributing, then it’s safe to assume he needs time to develop as well.
Ari Watford is committed and hopefully signs. But relying on a true freshman starting at DE seems risky. I know we’ve had great ones in the past: Parker and Murphy. But they are the exceptions.

Pretty sure all the issues you rattled off are why we have a new DE coach. Hopefully Rumph can clean up these problems pretty quickly. Not sure how they are going to do it without the portal, but we know CR is a good coach so I guess we’ll see.
