What would be the death of the sec?

Jul 16, 2014, 11:22 PM

It's often said that all things come to an end. All empires fall. So I was wondering if you thought the SEC would ever fall, deplete, or cease to be?

Money drives the train, right? And they've got plenty of it. Even though they've sacrificed academic integrity, big money sports has created a monster. However, money and power has also been the downfall of prior monopolies. Nowadays we're dealing with the stipend issue and paying kids. Could greed and money cause the derailment? Or will it continue to take this ugly course...

What if average Joe knew of the academic sacrifices they actually make. Most non-athlete kids find out second semester senior year whether or not they'll get into their school of choice. Meanwhile schools allow athletes to retake test late into the summer in hopes of qualification. If most parents knew, would they care? If it were publicized, would they take action or demand recourse? Is it fair that some honors student can't get partial scholarships but an illiterate athlete pays nothing? God forbid the NCAA ever get a president with the guts to tighten up this horrific debacle that is college athletics.

Perhaps I'm just seeking opinions but how do you feel about it? Will there always be this pathetic Finebaum heaven or will it end? Will they go the route of the Big East and jump ship when things change?

T.I.A. for your input,
TB83

A 4 team playoff where only one per conference get in. Look for a move to 8 teams quickly, where they could expect 2-4 teams to get in.

There are too many mouths to feed. Out of TAMU, LSU, Auburn, Bama, Georgia and Florida, how many do you think would be happy being represented in a best of 4 playoff once every 6 years?

Re: What would be the death of the sec?

Jul 16, 2014, 11:50 PM

Good point and +1. I hope it stays at four simply because I don't wanna see an sec loaded playoff. Cause they'll do that. I look to last year as a prime example. They'd have put Bama in there but Oklahoma was the better team. It was after that game that I thought hey maybe the BCS was right. Theres no way they'd have Oklahoma in the playoff. Most thought Baylor would've thumped UCF and perhaps Baylor might have got a playoff birth. Maybe. But UCF handled em. I see that and I'm like maybe, just maybe, perhaps the BCS wasn't so bad. But I'm in the minority there. Cause the playoff will hurt those not in the sec.

Just my opinion.

The death would be if conference champions were invited to playoffs because

Jul 16, 2014, 11:54 PM

There would then be zero advantage to play in a tough conference.

Glad I asked. I get good responses like this ^^^

Always good to get other perspectives. And you've got a point buddy. I could live with that situation. But does the AAC get a spot? I assume last year it would've been Mich St, FSU, Aub, Baylor (if we're picking 4 conf champs) but to include em all you'd have added .. what, Stanford and UCF to make it an even number. I could live with that. But who knew Oklahoma was that good. Furthermore, if it was 8, would we have been left out? Prolly. I guess assuming they take two more it would've been Bama and OSU.

I don't know that we'd see the death of it, but given

Jul 17, 2014, 5:21 AM

changes in the conferences over the years, I wouldn't be surprised to see a different make-up.

I think the new playoff system will drive further conference realignment, resulting in four super-conferences: ACC, SEC, Pac12 and B1G. The present Big12 will dissolve with members going to the SEC or Pac12.

Also, resulting will be new mega-TV deals, and I can foresee the SEC profiting heavily, should Texas and/or Oklahoma move to the SEC. The ACC will move to include ND as a full member, and IMO likely move to raid the BIG for Penn State and WVU, while adding UConn and either UCF or Cincy.

There is an old saying: what goes around, comes around. That guides my thinking that the SEC won't always reign supreme over the others, and the one conference I believe capable of given them a run for the money: the ACC.

Agree with some day Big 12 dissolving and having 4 super conferences. I think they would be 16team conferences withACC most likely additions being ND and Penn State. I think Texas is more likely to go to PAC16 and Oklahoma to SEC

I've read some of the same, especially regarding Texas

and Oklahoma.

I have a large number of relatives in Texas, including a recently retired high school HC, and the crowd is split between Texas and TAMU. Most all support the idea of Texas to the SEC, including the TAMU crowd. And all support a renewal of the rivalry between the two.

Likewise, all are very familiar with Clemson with general comments being that Clemson should have become a member of the SEC long ago.

The SEC will die as we know it when

Jul 17, 2014, 6:27 AM

the Big five conferences get rid of the NCAA as the governing body of sport. They (SEC), us (ACC), and 2 other conferences will form a group of 64 into a D1A football league. Which in essence will be a minor league for the NFL. It will include stipends for the athletes, and a complete playoff system that gives a true champion. It will also ruin college football as we know it.

the academic aspect of college sports...

Jul 17, 2014, 9:01 AM

is completely oversold by some folks...usually by ones that cant win or ones that see a lesser academic institutions having more success.

I would say nearly all major college scholarship athletes go to college bc its the next step in their lives and is the path to continue playing sports and get othe NFL....not bc of academics.

There is probably a few out there who pick Duke, Vandy or Stanford with the future academic success in mind, but these kids picking Clemson, Bama, UT, Auburn, etc. arent worried about academics.

If 40 or so schools from places like Tuscaloosa, Knoxville, Columbia, Blacksburg, Columbus, Ann Arbor, Lincoln, Austin, Clemson, etc broke away from the NCAA, they would fail.

I can see the SEC leading the charge to create a 40 school league across the USA. This league would be structured a lot like the NFL.

The problem is that breaking away would cause viewership (revenue) to decline.

Fans of Iowa St, Kansas, Wake Forest, Utah, Syracuse, etc are all individually small but collectively large. It takes all of these fans in order to keep (viewership) revenues flowing at the current rate.

Greedy people will not be able to understand this.

I disagree with this. I think the breakaway would be good for the viewership. Think about it, nobody tunes in to watch a power school play a UAB, Troy St, etc but everyone will tune in to watch a power school play a power school, especially if there are big names attached (Bama/Southern Cal, Texas/FSU, Ohio St/Notre Dame). Even if it isn't in the conference that your school is a member of you are more likely to watch that game than you were if they were playing Sisters of the Poor.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the problem with a "breakaway" is that the SEC

Jul 17, 2014, 10:23 AM

will try to drive the academic requirements, recruiting rules, etc., and I don't think the other schools would openly sink to that level.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In the 40-team league that you described....

Jul 17, 2014, 9:56 AM [ in reply to Tuscaloosa, Knoxville, Columbia, Blacksburg, Columbus, ]

it is unlikely that schools like Iowa State, Kansas, Wake Forest, Utah and Syracuse would be invited to join anyway.

Re: What would be the death of the sec?

Jul 17, 2014, 11:15 AM

If the NCAA enacted tougher academic standards and cracked down on over-signing it would be a huge blow to the SEC. They'd still have a strong conference, just not as dominate as they've been lately. Many people don't remember that up until the mid-90's the ACC had the highest per-school revenue and more national championships than the SEC. Things go in cycles.
