What is your favorite hand gun caliber?

I am still leaning towards my two old .32 caliber revolvers. They are both about 50-60 years old and work as good as new. The .32 may not have the knock down power as a .38 or .44, but it also doesn't have the kick that goes along with the higher calibers. Load it up with some hollow points, and it will still do plenty of damage. What are your thoughts?

It is getting harder to find .32 anymore. I bought a bunch last year just in case.

My Ruger Mark IV Hunter 22 is the most accurate with the bull barrel. I have lots of pistols, from .22 to 44mag but the one I shoot most accurate after the 22 is my 9mm Springfield and its a compact carry. My .40 and .45 S&W's are not near as accurate as the 9mm. Most likely its shooter but its a big difference for me.

Is your 9mm the Hellcat? I have one and like it, but I’m not as accurate with it as I am with my old .22.

I own a S&W 9mm, but my favorite is the .45 for the stopping power. 9mm ammo is just easier to get and cheaper, and with 17 shots in the magazine that should suffice for stopping power.

I am more of a long gun guy but have had a .22 revolver for pretty much all of my adult life. Got my CWP in 2021 and a Springfield Armory Hellcat 9mm. I like it for ease of carry but I’m not as accurate with it as I would like to be. Probably need to practice more but I’m not a big fan of range shooting (guns or golf).

.22lr 9mm .45acp
in that order. I like the .22lr because I can hit the hair on a flys nuts at 40yards which makes for some fun target shootin. I like the 9mm because it is a very versatile conceal carry round that doesnt buck as much as .40 .38 or .45 but still has the punch. I like the .45acp because it is one bad mama jama in a 1911.

I'm like you. I've still got two old S&W 32's (Detective Special & Chief Special) that I like to carry. They are small enough to fit in my pocket well and they are easy to shoot. Plus the S & W 32 Long Hollow Points do quite a bit of damage. My police friends say if there is a shooting there only needs to be one person who testifies. Yet I have six shots in these revolvers. That should silence the opposition if I just empty it into whatever I'm shooting at. I own 40 cal and an S&W 357, as well as multiple 9 mm's. They're just too bulky for me as "carry weapons." So call me old fashioned. I'm 70. I've earned it! Go Tigers!

I have a 38, and hubby has a 9mm that I can't use because of lack of hand strength. Now I am having problems handling the 38. Any recommendations of a smaller and easier to handle gun for a grandmother that is still accurate and won't jam?

Is your 38 a snub nosed hammerless revolver? Is the recoil too much or pulling the hammer back? Might try the hammerless 38 if its a hammer issue plus its safer as a carry. Or from there you can go 380, .32, .25, 22mag, or 22lr. 380 would be a semi-auto and might be easier to operate maybe, but the kick wont be a whole lot different than a 38. My Taurus 380 has a little bite to it. A 32 or 25 would be big step down in recoil.

Pig.... Unlike what most people think, there is not such thing as "knock down" power unless you are hit with a 105 howitzer round or other piece of artillery. A well placed round is much more effective that what people think of as "knock down" power. I've got pistols of every caliber and like them all for different reasons.

My wife has a 32 baretta in her car. I have a Taurus 380 in my car. 38 rev in bedside table. Old Star 9mm upstairs is the most accurate on the range but they quit making the ammo in the 1970’s.

I like my S&W 38 special 5 shot revolver with crimson trace in the grip to be idiot proof grab and fire if needed for self defense (not that I've had to but just have confidence with). Smith and Wesson M&P 9 is the one I shoot most and probably best with. 357 fun for a few shots but not much beyond that for me.

.40 caliber for sure. 9mm is too fast and .45 cal has too much power. So get a 40 cal which has some qualities of both. I have a Beretta 96 and a very nice HK. Saves on ammo cost as both are 40's.

I prefer a revolver and have them in multiple calibers. I have a few semi autos as well, but my experience is if you leave the clip loaded for a long time the spring strength deteriorates so the gun will not fire as intended.

I've owned several handguns:
* Colt 1911 - .45 ACP, Army issue 1943 - never saw an arsenal rework - sold it a few years ago. I liked it a lot and handled it well - just didn't think the safety requirement was best for someone nearing 80 years old..... hated to let it go, though.
* Browning Hi-Power - 9mm - it was my favorite one of all - unbeliveably accurate. Stoen during a move between houses.
* Beretta .22 caliber, semi automatic - a terrible pisto that would jam too often - sold it.
* S&W .32 caliber revolver - was my grandfathers pistol - trigger pull was about 2 oz. - scared me and sold it real quick.
* Ruger 22 Luger - was OK - sold it.
* A Czeck .22 semi-automatic - dangerously bad - sold it.
* S&W .38 Chief Special - 5-shot - not +P - I bought it for my wife before the +P ammo was around. I've kept this handgun as my only personal protection becaus as a revolver it's simple and unconfusing in an emergency. At my age of 79 I'm comfortable with my shooting skills, but question what I might do if I had to operate a safety before firing. That never concerned me a few years ago, but it's something to consider at my age.

I always carry my .380 but have a 9mm close by as well. Just the 2 calibers. Makes buying ammo simple for me.
