A Poll about Capital Punishment. Question is, Do you think Executions should be painless?

Do you think Executions should have to be painless?    [Results]

Yes, it is the Humane thing to do.
No, these killers did not worry about the pain THEY inflicted, an eye for an eye.

What is the purpose of punishment?

1. As a deterrent, so that people will know there could be a price to pay, thus be hesitant to do bad things.

2. Same as #1, but also to remove bad people from the general population, for the safety and well being of others.

3. To satisfy our own desire for revenge and retribution by making bad people suffer.

BLUF - Bottom Line Up Front -- If you done fugged up that bad, you deserve to suffer.

I think of it this way.

Punishment in the form of confinement is designed in a manner that the period of confinement is the punishment. They are confined AS punishment, not confined FOR punishment. When this is the sentence imposed by the justice system, they are to be confined in a fair manner for the designated period of time. This has devolved into a system of hide-your-bunghole and join the right gang, but seems fair enough when the parole board doesn't screw it all up.

When Capital punishment is warranted, the sentence is designed to be a punishment.

Capital Offenses - murder, treason, genocide, or the killing or kidnapping of a Congressman, the President, or a Supreme Court justice.

It should not be the concern of the people to worry about the feelings or pain inflicted on the damn3d. 18th Century criminologist Cesare Beccaria contended that the proper use of punishment is the minimum required to create deterrence in the mind of potential criminals. I personally disagree with Beccaria on his opposition to the death penalty (except in extreme cases), but I respect his determination to limit punishment to equal the level of harm inflicted by the perpetrator. The death penalty is reserved for such high crimes that conducting such should negate their right to a pain free exit. The extensive effort of the justice system to remain humane can be traced to the desire to maintain the purity of the system. While that is noble, I think many would say that the system is far from pure. A hangman distances this stain from the justice system - public executions would be the ultimate deterrence.

Imagine if that was the halftime show. Err'body minding their p's and q's - time to dump all stock in the fuggery.

If we're gonna have executions, they shouldn't be sanitized. Let's do it like the ol' days.

whether guillotine or axe, the condemned would tip the executioner to make sure blade was sharp, the deed was done as quick as possible to avoid repeated attempts

we wouldn't be discussing the humanity relating to causing a criminal pain. When we got all touchy feely the criminals won and crime became a way of life.

Not to get political in the FunZone, but to each their own - put it to the states.

I think the 'you kill, we kill ya back' mentality creates a strong, but not infallible, sense of deterrence.

They don't have much trouble with theft in the countries where they still chop hands off. I'm sure there are some dimwits that think they won't get caught, but much fewer than here.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It works 100% on the sumbeach you carry it out on.

That's all the deterrent I care about. Take these, what is it now, 35+ people who are on Death Row in SC, and start carrying out those sentences. If the law has spoken, the state shouldn't have to continue to support people who are supposed to get dead.
