The "people in Gaetz's circle" almost certainly referred to Gaetz's fraternity bro Joel Greenberg. Believe it or not, Greenberg was the bad influence in the relationship.
Greenberg's own story is just mind-bogglingly corrupt. Read up on the guy, it'll leave you shaking your head. He actually tried to turn state's evidence against Gaetz and was willing - along with the girl in question - to testify against him. The problem was, Greenberg was an awe-inspiringly awful human being and the girl had become a pr0n star with apparent addiction problems...which meant both were terrible witnesses.
